Truck Driver Trapped in SH 161 Construction Site Accident

It took Grand Prairie firefighters several minutes to extricate a trapped driver of a water tanker truck that rolled down a slope and on its roof at the SH 161 construction site. The accident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. Friday just south of West Jefferson.

Sergeant Eric Hansen, Traffic Section, said workers at the site used construction equipment to push the truck on its side and hold it from rolling down the slope while firefighters stabilized it and used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the driver.

The driver was transported by ambulance to the hospital in undetermined condition.

Chamber of Commerce Hosts Summer Blast at Traders Village

With more than 40 vendors offering a variety of merchandise and services, the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce held its inaugural Summer Blast at Traders Village.

Chamber President Lynn McGinley said Summer Blast was a way for Chamber members to showcase their products and services.

The festive atmosphere at Traders Village gave visitors of all ages something to do from gourmet food trucks to carnival games and rides.

Dedication of Advantage Academy's New Grand Prairie Campus

In a ceremony Thursday that featured David Barton, WallBuilders, as the keynote speaker, Advantage Academy dedicated its new 70,000 square foot, 850 student capacity, $14.2 million Grand Prairie Campus. The 8.94 acre campus is located at 959 Freetown Road.

Sherri Busalacchi, Director of Marketing said, “The students, staff and parents have been so grateful for this beautiful new campus. The pride for their classrooms and campus has only increased the determination of all our wonderful teachers and students to dream big, work hard and to love learning. The close-knit community atmosphere of this new school is infectious.”

Police Carry Torch for Special Olympics

Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye along with 20 Grand Prairie Police Officers ran 4.8 miles Wednesday morning, stopping at Grand Prairie ISD schools to meet with cheering students.

The 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run is a nationwide law enforcement effort to show its support to Special Olympic athletes.

AirHogs Win in Front of Record Crowd

In front of the largest crowd in franchise history, the Grand Prairie AirHogs provided their fans with their money’s worth on Monday night, as they followed up their championship ring ceremony with a dramatic, come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the El Paso Diablos in the AirHogs’ home opener in front of 7,101 at QuikTrip Park.

The winning run scored on a passed ball by Patrick Arlis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, allowing Yasutsugu Nishimoto to trot home, after former AirHogs closer Geivy Garcia had intentionally walked Trent Lockwood with one out.

Dubiski Career High School 10th Grader Wins Car in School Attendance Program

On Friday, Emanuel Barrios, a tenth grader at Dubiski Career High School, was one of three Grand Prairie ISD high school students to win a car in this year’s Every Child, Every Seat, Every Day attendance incentive program.

High School students (grades 10-12) who met attendance criteria qualified to win one of three cars from Graff Chevrolet (one for each high school) with tax, title and license on the vehicle paid by Texas Trust Credit Union and one year of Chik fil A meals per week.

Grand Prairie Hosts Stop for “Run for the Wall” Cross-country Motorcycle Ride

Five-hundred motorcycle riders on a cross-country motorcycle journey that began on May 15 in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and will arrive in Washington, DC on May 25 in time to celebrate Memorial weekend activities, stopped in Grand Prairie for the night on Saturday.

Hosted by the Grand Prairie ISD, City of Grand Prairie and various businesses and veteran’s organizations, the riders stopped at Dubiski Career High School for dinner and a short program before retiring for the evening.

Cedar Hill High School Senior Dies in I-20 Wreck

Grand Prairie police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred at about 5:40 a.m. Saturday morning on westbound I-20 at Carrier Parkway that killed Cornelius Towns, 18, of DeSoto.

Sergeant Eric Hansen, Grand Prairie Police Traffic Section, said a 1994 Lexus driven by Evan Thomas Williams, 19, of Cedar Hill drifted off of the roadway, travelled down a grassy embankment between I-20 and the westbound entrance ramp from Carrier Parkway. The car became airborne, travelled some distance and crashing into the west bank of Fish Creek.

The car then overturned, ejecting Towns from the back seat.

Police Task Force Targets Commercial Vehicle Safety

On May 16, members of the Grand Prairie Police Department’s Traffic Division along with officers from six other local police departments conducted a commercial safety inspection initiative at the Verizon Theater parking lot. The task force of officers conducted safety inspections on 37 commercial vehicles.

In celebration of National Police Week, the Grand Prairie Police Department hosted its annual Police Memorial Service on Monday at the Public Safety Building. The service honored all police officers who gave their lives in the line of duty including two Grand Prairie officers, Officer Lyndon King in 1982 and Sgt. Gregory Hunter in 2004.

A morning shower and a cloudy sky did not stop people hungry for crawfish from coming to the Grand Prairie Farmers Market Saturday to get some of the 800 pounds cooked up for the Second Annual Crawfish Boil. Approximately 1,100 students (mostly juniors and seniors) attended the “Safest Summer Ever" Rally held Tuesday at Grand Prairie's Dubiski Career High School. Activities include various “experience areas” including Driving Under the Influence (riding tricycles with impairment goggles on), Texting and Driving and Click it or Ticket seat belt events. Student signed pledges to have the safest summer ever supporting.

Argument Sparks Shooting at Downtown Business

An argument between an employee and a customer inside the Topline Salvage , 433 East Church, lead to a shooting outside the business that sent the employee to the hospital.

Grand Prairie Police Detective Lyle Gensler said officers were called to the business just before 6:00 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived the suspect fled but was later found hiding in a dumpster. He was arrested and transported to the Grand Prairie Jail.

The victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

Police Motorcycle Skills Competition Draws Area’s Top Riders

More than sixty motorcycle officers from over twenty agencies from around the Metorplex and as far away as Dumas, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana pitted their driving skills Saturday on a challenging closed course at the parking lot of the Grand Prairie Home Depot on Highway 360.

“The training for these competitions is very intense and what that does, that hones these motorcycle officers’ skills,” Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye said.

Chief Dye added, “The training for these competitions really helps these officers. It helps us because it keeps them safer while they’re out working for us.”

Police Launch Victim Relief Ministries

Police Chief Steve Dye announced on Tuesday the formation of the Grand Prairie Police and Clergy Coalition (GPPACC).

“It is a way to reach out to all the area congregations,” Chief Dye said. He went on to say the mission of the Police Department and that of churches is very similar, to help others, serve others and improve the quality of life.

Through GPPACC, Victim Relief Ministries (VRM), a faith based victim service organization, is forming a Grand Prairie Chapter.

The Woods United Methodist Church Begins Crosswalk, a Walk to Jerusalem

On Saturday, members of The Woods United Methodist Church wearing blue shirts bearing the words “Crosswalk – The Woods United Methodist Church” and pedometers walked through the neighborhoods of the Westchester section to begin the church’s inaugural Crosswalk, a walk to Jerusalem. The goal is for members to collectively log 7007 miles walking, the distance from Grand Prairie to the city of Jerusalem.

As the walkers passed through the neighborhoods Saturday, they greeted residents and stopped and prayed for the people in the neighborhood.

Runners Take on Downtown Streets for LifeLine Shelter

More than two-hundred runners took on the downtown streets and the challenging hills near Grand Prairie High School Saturday morning in the inaugural Run for Shelter 5k run to benefit LifeLine Shelter.

LifeLine Shelter’s is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce homelessness among families of school children in crises who are enrolled the Grand Prairie Independent School District.

Storm Hits North Grand Prairie, Damages Businesses

Update 4/5/2012 @ 10:30 a.m. - The National Weather Service today confirmed that it was an EF0 tornado with winds between 65-85 mph that struck this area.

Grand Prairie did not escape damage from the storms that moved through Tuesday afternoon. Several businesses in the area of State Highway 360 and Avenue K were heavily damaged by high winds that blew off roofs, damaged cars and took down power poles and trees.

Many people who rode out the storm in their business believe a tornado touched down in the area.

It took city crews several hours to clear the debris from the streets.

Grand Prairie’s Farmers Markets Opens New Season

The Grand Prairie Farmers Market opened its 2012 season in Market Square, Saturday with BBQ, entertainment from the Band Double Ace, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Market Square is on the corner of Main Street and NW 2nd St.

The market will be open each Saturday through December 15 featuring locally grown fruits and vegetables, plants, tamales, breads, salsas, dips, relishes, soy candles, eggs, meats, soaps, honey, wines, chips, cookies and more.

Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration at Veterans Memorial Park

Grand Prairie celebrated Texas' newly appointed Vietnam Veterans Day on March 29 at Veterans Memorial Park and Veterans Park Event Center. Visitors formed a "Welcome Home" line the Vietnam veterans walked through receiving handshakes, pats on the back and well wishes. A Vietnam era "Huey" helicopter conducted a fly over.

Grand Prairie Police Announce Priority Video Alarm Response Plan

At a news conference held Tuesday at the Public Safety Building, Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye introduced the department's new Priority Video Alarm Response plan.

Athough police will continue to respond to all burglar alarms, alarms that have a video confirmation of a burglary or suspicious activity will get priority response from officers.

With the new video technology, officers get visual confirmation on what caused the alarm and real-time (visual) updates while responding.

Volunteers Build Three Grand Prairie Community Gardens in One Day

On Saturday, more than 800 volunteers gathered in three locations to build three community gardens in Grand Prairie. The projects are the result of a unique partnership between Keep Grand Prairie Beautiful and the Boys and Girls Club national convention in Fort Worth.

“The convention was looking for a community service project and we were lucky enough to snag their interest,” said KGPB Coordinator Tammy Chan. “Working with our community gardens partners completes the package.”

Boy Killed in House Fire

Grand Prairie fire officials said a house fire on Friday after 1 p.m. in the 100 block of Balchen Way killed a young boy.

Fire Chief Clif Nelson said investigators estimated the boy’s age to be between 10-12 years-old. He added that the boy’s name was being withheld until notification of next of kin.

A fire department ambulance transported the boy to Baylor Medical Center at Irving where he was pronounced dead.

The fire also killed two dogs and heavily damaged the one story frame home.

Annual "Soup’s on for Love" Benefits LifeLine Shelter

Soup’s on for Love, the annual fund raiser benefiting LifeLine Shelter, brought in more than $2 thousand to help LifeLine Shelter reduce homelessness among families of Grand Prairie ISD students.

A record number attended the annual event held at the Grand Prairie ISD administration building on Friday to taste the wide variety of soups from various businesses and organizations.

Texas Trust Credit Union’s Taco Soup was voted this year’s best soup.

Moseley Elementary Students Raise $3 Thousand for Leukemia & Lymphoma

Students at Moseley Elementary school got a special treat Friday when teachers made good on their promise to dance in tutus if the school raised more than $3 thousand for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The school-wide donation drive, named Pasta for Pennies because the class that raised the most money gets a pasta party courtesy Olive Garden, began on January 13. Ms. Wood’s kindergarten class took the top prize this year, raising more than $419.

Rheatore Terry, Counselor, said the school began raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in 2008 when a former teacher at the school was diagnosed with lymphoma. She said each year a different incentive is used to reward the students for their generosity.

Terry said this year the school set a record, raising $3,725.20.

Grand Prairie ISD Completes its Seventeenth Outdoor Learning Center

Police Talk Suicidal Man Down from Gopher-Warrior Bowl Light Pole

Grand Prairie police this morning talked a distraught man threatening suicide down from a light pole at the Gopher-Warrior Bowl.

The incident began around 5:20 a.m. when the man, upset over a personal relationship, called police threatening to jump off the bridge at State Highway 161 and Interstate 20. When officers arrived there, the man could not be located.

Police Chase Ends in Suicide

Update 11/14/2011 @ 2:30 pm: Grand Prairie police identified the victim as Kenneth L. Irvin, 50.

The driver of a 2005 Ford SUV, who lead Grand Prairie police on a ten minute pursuit from the northwest sector of the city, killed himself after stopping in the 3200 block of Corn Valley at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Detective John Brimmer, police spokesman, said the incident began when a patrol officer stopped the Ford SUV near NW Dallas and NW 24 after the officer observed the driver talking with a known prostitute. While making a routine record check of the driver, the officer observed him making unusual movements inside the vehicle.

Kirby Creek Gardens Grand Re-Opening

On Wednesday, the City of Grand Prairie and the Grand Prairie ISD celebrated the grand re-opening of the newly remodeled Kirby Creek Natural Science Education Center, 3400 Corn Valley Road, with a carrot pull rather than the usual ribbon cutting.

The education center will now offer visitors an expanded hands-on learning experience thanks to recently completed renovations.

With help of a grant from the GPISD Education Foundation, art students at both South Grand Prairie High School and Grand Prairie High School along with teachers and school administrators have joined to make ceramic bowls for the Empty Bowls Project.

Foundation Honors Slain Grand Prairie Police Officer

At a ceremony held Wednesday at the Public Safety Building, Denise Hunter, widow of Grand Prairie Police Sergeant Gregory Hunter, was presented a memorial statue by David Blanchard, President of the Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation.

The Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation is the national advocacy group for the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Based out of Washington DC, the foundation has trustees throughout the country.

The Woods UMC Opens Pumpkin Patch with 3,000 Pumpkins

The Woods United Methodist Church, 1350 W. Bardin, opened its sixth annual Pumpkin Patch Saturday when more than seventy church members unloaded about three thousand pumpkins along with various shaped and sized gourds.

Cary Dover, Director of Church Operations for The Woods, said the pumpkins go on sale immediately after unloading and the patch will be open seven days a week through October 31 or until all the pumpkins are sold. All proceeds from the sales help support the church’s ministries and community activities such as the Grand Prairie Co-op. Purchases are tax deductible.

Texas General Hospital Expected to Open Soon

At Thursday’s meeting of the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee, Suleman Hashmi, President and CEO of Texas General Hospital, announced the facility was nearing completion with construction, inspections and accreditation process. He said it is expected to open for patients in three to five weeks.

Church Kicks Off Free Drive-Thru Breakfast

The Crossing church kicked off its drive-thru breakfast Friday. The free breakfast will be each Friday from now through November 18.

Setup in the UA Theater parking lot near the intersection of South Carrier and Westchester, the church gives out free muffins, granola bars and juice to anyone that drives through.

Soldier Parents Surprise Daughter at School

Army MSgt. Tom Hawarden and SSgt. Diana Hawarden, parents of nine-year-old Anna Hawarden, paid the Florence Hill Elementary School student a surprise visit in her classroom Wednesday morning.

The Hawardens, who just returned from a year of duty in Iraq, said Anna was the first of their five children to visit.

Motorcyclist Killed on Highway 161

Update: 9/2/2011 - 6:30 a.m.

Grand Prairie police said a motorcyclist traveling southbound on Highway 161 was struck by a northbound truck that had turned west into the path of the motorcycle at the westbound service road of Interstate 20 at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters Battle Heat and Dense Woods to Contain Grass Fire

It took Grand Prairie firefighters a few hours to put out a grass fire Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Timber Oaks Lane and Prairie Hill Lane.

Firefighters were hampered by the high heat and dense woods fighting the fire that approached the Colonnade Apartments.

Police Memorial Service Honors Fallen Officers

The Grand Prairie Police Department began National Police Week with its annual Police Memorial Service on Monday.

The service that took place in front of the Police/Fire Memorial Wall at the Grand Prairie Public Safety Building honored the two Grand Prairie police officers who died in the line of duty, Lyndon King and Sgt. Gregory Hunter.

AirHogs Give Fans Preview of Season

More than 500 AirHogs fans, dignitaries, and sponsors packed QuikTrip Park Thursday night to get a preview of the Grand Prairie AirHogs 2011 season at the team's inaugural “Party at the Park .”

General Manager Craig Brasfied spoke to the standing-room-only crowd in the left field bar area about the team’s new promotions and the affordable prices set for the season. Field Manager Ricky VanAsselberg gave a run down on the type of baseball fans can expect to see the AirHogs play and his style of managing.

National Day of Prayer at City Hall Plaza

Pastors from across Grand Prairie gathered at the Liberty Bell at City Hall Plaza to to lead a large crowd in prayer as they celebrated the National Day of Prayrer.

The pastors took turns leading the crowd in prayer for the country, state, city, schools, and the men and women servicing in the armed forces.

KaBOOM! One Day Playground Build

Thanks to more than 200 volunteers from Foresters™, a life insurance provider committed to the well-being of families, Grand Prairie Parks and Recreation, Grand Prairie Boys Baseball, and non-profit KaBOOM!, Grand Prairie got a brand new, 2,500 square-foot playground that included features such as a Glide Slide, Spiral Climber and Swing Sets.

The playground located at 2501 Pine Street was built in one day on land that was once used as an approach for aircraft to the runways of the former Naval Air Station on Mountain Creek Lake.

Planning for the playground began at a Design Day event held in March when local children and community leaders met with organizers from KaBOOM! and Foresters to design their dream playground. The children's drawings were then used to create the final playground design.
