Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie announced the track’s 2012 Spring Thoroughbred Season features 12 stakes, down from 19 in 2011, including two graded stakes, with purses totaling $1.3 million.
The two premiere events on the 2012 Lone Star Park stakes calendar are the Grade 3, $200,000 Texas Mile for 3-year-olds and up to be run Saturday, April 28 and the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1-1/16 miles to be run Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day). In 2011 there were three Grade 3 races run at Lone Star Park, including the Ouija Board at a mile over turf for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up.
"We took a long hard look at our purse structure and felt the best way to support local horseman was to make some difficult cuts to our stakes program," said Lone Star Park President and General Manager Drew Shubeck. “Eliminating stakes from our calendar was a difficult but necessary decision in order to preserve overnight purses as we attempt to remain competitive with tracks in neighboring states that have purses supplemented by gaming.”

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population. While some worry that their pet may be too young for this procedure, spaying and neutering is safe for kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old. And, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, spaying a female cat before the first heat cycle is actually beneficial, rather than waiting until after one heat cycle has occurred. The procedure is known to improve the health of the pet, including a reduced risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections.

The Bilge Pumps are a pirate music group who specialize in performances that combine nautical songs, sea shanties, and Celtic music with a huge (and we mean huge!) dose of silly comedy. They have been in demand all over the country for their entertainingly goofy stage antics, their well-blended and harmonic voices, and their musical skill as they take everyone’s favorite nautical music and put their own particular spin on it.

The Lateral Entry Program is a form of seniority pay, offering additional compensation for those qualified applicants who already have prior experience as peace officers with a comparable law enforcement agency. The lateral entry officers must complete the same steps in the Civil Service hiring process as applicants with no prior police experience. Located within the original town site of Grand Prairie, the Copeland Home was built in 1902 by B.P. Hale and his wife, Ruth. The Copeland family purchased the home in 1908. Dr. Copeland served the community for more than 60 years and is best known for having helped deliver more than 4,000 babies in Grand Prairie.
The white clapboard home, styled for the farm-type, small town resident, was designed with a high pitched roof, narrow windows and a back door entrance. The original five rooms had 12-foot ceilings, a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and study. A bathroom and enclosed back porch have been added. The beautiful oak hardwood floors, interior woodwork, front door and windows are original. The original fireplace was removed by the Copeland family to make room for two closets.
The entrance hallway is unique to the time period and includes a classic ornamental antique hall divider display made of cherry wood.
Before remodeling the home, Dr. Copeland had a garden area and a four-acre orchard. The orchard land was presented to First Presbyterian Church in 1948 as a gift from the Copeland family.
Furniture in the home’s study includes a desk dated from the 1800s set just as Dr. Copeland used it, holding his physician’s bag and books donated by his family.

At a large, tastefully appointed Sneden's Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken and wife Chris must get "the story" straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and mis-communications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. Rumors is rated PG-13 for strong adult language and humor.
