Police to use “Vehicle Burglary Report Cards” to Prevent Thefts
The program utilizes both patrol officer and Citizen on Patrol (COP) volunteers to randomly inspect parked cars for potential opportunities to criminals.
After the inspection, a “Vehicle Burglary Report Card” is placed under the windshield wiper to let the owner know if the vehicle passed or failed. Any potential crime problems are noted on the report card, such as:
- Property left in view
- Keys left in vehicle
- Window open
“You would be surprised how many people leave their purses in the front seat, or even leave their keys in the car just to run in a store,” said Police Chief Steve Dye. “The Vehicle Burglary Report Cards is a simple way of letting motorists know what they can do to prevent becoming a victim, and it helps keep our officers alert, pro-active and engaged.”
