Grand Prairie Now Has a Hospital – Texas General Hospital Opens

Suleman Hashmi (center), President and CEO and Hasan Hashmi, MD, Chairman, cut the ribbon at Thursday's grand opening ceremony for Texas General Hospital hosted by the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce.

Grand Prairie ended its distinction of being one of the largest cities in the country without a hospital on Thursday when a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce officially opened Texas General Hospital.

The forty-five bed, state-of-the-art hospital with a 24/7 emergency room located at 2709 Hospital Blvd. began accepting patients ten days ago. Since then, doctors have treated more than seventy patients and performed three surgeries.

Suleman Hashmi, President and CEO of Texas General, said more than $75 million was invested to completely renovate the old DFW Medical Center hospital. He said about the only thing that remains of the old hospital that closed in 2000 is the exterior walls.

The interior was completely gutted and new walls, flooring, plumbing, electrical and air conditioning system were installed.

Hashmi said Texas General has invested in new equipment with the latest technology to make the hospital one of the most medically advanced in the area. Some of the medical equipment at Texas General can only be found in some of the largest hospitals in the country.

Dr. Richard Carter, DO, of Arlington, one Texas General’s surgeons, describe the hospital’s medical equipment as “Stars Wars” equivalent. The best equipped of all the hospitals he uses.

With this investment in medical equipment, the new facility and the latest technology for support systems, Hashmi said Texas General is attracting some the top doctors from around the area. More than one hundred doctors are now affiliated with the hospital with the number going up almost daily, he said.

The hospital plans to grow slowly and eventually open the north tower to bring the total number of beds to 200. With future plans of “one day we actually have a medical school here,” Dr. Hasan Hashmi, MD, Chairman of Texas General Hospital said.
