Lone Star Park Thoroughbred Season to Feature 12 Stakes Worth $1.3 Million

Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie announced the track’s 2012 Spring Thoroughbred Season features 12 stakes, down from 19 in 2011, including two graded stakes, with purses totaling $1.3 million.

The two premiere events on the 2012 Lone Star Park stakes calendar are the Grade 3, $200,000 Texas Mile for 3-year-olds and up to be run Saturday, April 28 and the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 1-1/16 miles to be run Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day). In 2011 there were three Grade 3 races run at Lone Star Park, including the Ouija Board at a mile over turf for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up.

"We took a long hard look at our purse structure and felt the best way to support local horseman was to make some difficult cuts to our stakes program," said Lone Star Park President and General Manager Drew Shubeck. “Eliminating stakes from our calendar was a difficult but necessary decision in order to preserve overnight purses as we attempt to remain competitive with tracks in neighboring states that have purses supplemented by gaming.”

Become a Foster Parent to a Puppy or Kitten

Have a kitten or puppy in your house for up to four weeks by volunteering for the Prairie Paws Animal Shelter foster program. The shelter has preemie kittens and puppies that need to be loved and nurtured before they are ready to be put up for adoption.

Volunteers are asked to attend a 30-minute training session before they are given an animal to care for. A care kit, including food, is sent home with each animal. Care time is about two to four weeks for each animal. Animals must be at least eight weeks old to be available for adoption.

Foster families will be notified when a need exists, may be assigned an animal or may select from the available foster babies. The other animals in the foster home must be current on all vaccinations. Foster families can choose when and when not to foster an animal.

For more information or to volunteer, call Lauren Sossi at 972-237-8568.

“Beat the Heat” – Have Your Female Cat Spayed for $20

During the month of February, “Beat the Heat” and have your female cat spayed for just $20, which includes a rabies vaccination. This is a special offer from the Prairie Paws Animal Shelter and the Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP). Call 972-472-3500 or visit www.spayneuternet.org to make an appointment and bring your female cat to the Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, 2222 W. Warrior Tr., on the morning of her surgery. She will be taken to KCAAP to be spayed and can be picked up that same afternoon at Prairie Paws.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population. While some worry that their pet may be too young for this procedure, spaying and neutering is safe for kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old. And, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, spaying a female cat before the first heat cycle is actually beneficial, rather than waiting until after one heat cycle has occurred. The procedure is known to improve the health of the pet, including a reduced risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections.

On Saturday, more than two thousand parents and students came to the GPISD Experience held at South Grand Prairie High School to get an overview of the district’s Schools of Choice, Programs of Choice and Preferred Programs of Choice, and to learn about the district's new era of educational opportunities for students and parents.

Very Strong Winds on Sunday, Wind Advisory Issued

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued wind advisory for Grand Prairie on Sunday.

Very strong winds and dry air will occur behind a dryline as it moves through North Texas on Sunday. West to southwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph will occur with the strongest winds occurring in the afternoon hours.

As the strong westerly winds move into our area this afternoon, some West Texas dust will accompany it. Most of the dust will be in the mid levels of the atmosphere by the time it reaches our area, so visibilities should remain high. However, you may notice the sky turning brown and hazy by the late afternoon hours.

The wind advisory has been issued for most of North Texas from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

In addition, the strong winds and dry air will combine to produce high to extreme fire weather conditions across much of the region. The most critical conditions will occur west of Interstate 35. Avoid all outside burning or welding today, and do not toss lit cigarettes outside.

Longest Tenured Grand Prairie Police Officer to Retire

Grand Prairie’s longest tenured police officer currently on record will retire next week after 39 years of service.

Lieutenant Ron Meine is set to end full time employment with the city of Grand Prairie on January 27. Meine began work as a police officer in January 1973 after spending time in television and appliance sales. He notes that the greatest assets to police work over the years have been technology-based, including 9-1-1, the advent of hand-held radios with emergency buttons, taser guns and onboard computers in police cars.

Meine recalls several incidents during his time as a police officer when modern technology would have been handy, but he adds that he was always known for hanging on to the suspects, despite difficult situations:

A Shashbuckling Night of Music at the Uptown Theater

The Uptown Theater presents an evening of pirate music, swashbuckling fun, and nautical nonsense for the whole family starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children and available at www.uptowntheatergp.com or by calling 972-237-UPTN.

The group performs larger than life in their authentic-feeling pirate-themed costumes and the variety of instruments backing up their bellowing voices. They have been in demand all over the country for their entertainingly goofy stage antics, their well-blended and harmonic voices, and their musical skill as they take everyone’s favorite nautical music and put their own particular spin on it.
