Re-Opening of Kirby Creek Natural Science Education Set
The improvements feature an expanded and improved teaching vegetable garden and composting area, upgrades to the demonstration gardens and interpretive signage, and the addition of a cistern for rainwater harvesting, a hot house and a new kitchen herb garden. Improvements were also made to the bog garden and sensory gardens, and the original gravel paths were replaced with pavers and decomposed granite pathways for improved accessibility.
Kirby Creek Natural Science Education Center serves as a teaching facility for Grand Prairie Independence School District students as well as a training facility for the city’s Master Composters Program.
This project was developed from an update to the park master plan begun in 2008 when Grand Prairie Parks and Recreation and Environmental Services departments in partnership with the GPISD worked with consultant Oliver Windham, LA., to develop Kirby Creek Park into a first class education center for the school district and community.
