On Thursday, representatives from many local businesses got the opportunity to learn about Dubiski Career High School’s innovative programs that partners the school, its students with local businesses.
Winston Minix, Internship Coordinator, laid out the plan that includes businesses as an important part of student’s education.
The programs, setup to give students “real world” experiences, allows seniors to work at local businesses as an unpaid intern for five weeks, Minix said.
He explained that students will have to apply for a position in their chosen career field, take part in hiring interviews and go through the business’ normal hiring process. The business then gets to select the student that best fits its need.
“It’s a win-win situation,” Minix said. “The students get the experience. We love for students to get that real world application. For the business side, the business gets to grow their own. They are able to mentor to students and give them their perspective on how that business is run.”
Minix pointed out that the internship program is so successful at Baylor Medical Center, the health care provider ends up hiring many its interns after their high school graduation.
Dubiski offers other ways business can partner with the school to better educate students. There is the one day shadowing program where a junior goes to a business to observe its operations. Also, business can serve on the school’s advisory committee to give input on the latest trends, technology so the school’s classes can stay abreast with industry.
Businesses interested in any of the school’s partnership programs can contact Winston Minix at 972-343-7800 Ext. 7946 for more information.
