New Police Chief, Steve Dye, was the guest speaker at Wednesday’s Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership luncheon held at the Ruthe Jackson Center.
Introduced by City Manager Tom Hart who said of the former Colleyville Police Chief, “You go out and look literally all over the country and find somebody pretty close.”
“As many of you know he’s had a baptism by fire,” as Hart referred to one of Grand Prairie’s worst crimes in its history, the shooting death of six that occurred just over three weeks after Dye took over as chief.
“I certainly don’t take the appointment as your Chief lightly,” Chief Dye said as he began speaking of his career and desire to lead a police department in a large, diverse community in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He said Grand Prairie was number one on his short list of departments he wished to lead.
Community policing is the foundation of his vision for the department, Chief Dye said, a partnership between police, residents, businesses and the school district. Since patrol officers have the highest visibility and interaction with people in the community, he said, patrol is the core of community policing.
Having inherited an excellent group of men and women, Chief Dye said he wants to take the department to higher levels. He said he expects his officers to take the extra step to provide the highest level of service.
If it’s writing a ticket, directing traffic or taking a report, “I never want my organization to lose site of the fact that we work for the citizens of Grand Prairie,” he said.
Chief Dye added that he believes in responsibly aggressive enforcement and expects his officers to keep Grand Prairie safe.
“I expect the bad guys to be going to jail, no if, ands or buts,” Chief Dye said. “We’re going to do it responsibly and we’re going to do it respectfully.”
