Dangerous Heat Possible This Week

In its latest update, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said the ongoing heat wave Grand Prairie is experiencing is expected to continue and become potentially dangerous this week. Several records are in jeopardy of being tied or broken.

Multiple days of 105 to 110 degree heat is expected for Monday through Thursday. This combination of very hot afternoon temperatures, high humidity, and little relief during the nighttime will lead to a very high risk of heat-related illnesses.

An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for all of north Texas for Tuesday through Thursday. The issuance of an Excessive Heat Watch is rare, and is issued when heat index readings are expected to reach or exceed 110 with nighttime lows in the upper 70s or warmer. All or parts of the watch area will likely be upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning for Tuesday through at least Thursday.

There are indications that this dangerous heat wave could persist into next weekend. The Excessive Heat Watches and Warnings may eventually be extended into next weekend.

“We're having a hot summer, but this coming week will likely be the hottest week since late August 2000,” said Greg Patrick, National Weather Service in Fort Worth. “Even those that are accustomed to the heat may begin to suffer heat illness. “
