Council Bans Handguns from City Council Meeting

Acting on a recommendation from the Public Safety Committee, the City Council in its Briefing Session Tuesday voted to prohibit persons with a Concealed Handgun License from carrying a weapon into City Council and Council Committee meetings.

In a presentation to the Council, City Attorney Don Postell said there are State laws that restrict the city from banning handguns in city facilities during normal business. But, the law does provide for cities to prohibit handguns from council and council committee meetings.

Postell said the ban is an administrative measure, not an ordinance so therefore it does not have to be an item on the council agenda. A consensus of the Council is all that’s needed.

The city will place new signs written in both English and Spanish near the Council Chamber prohibiting guns from council meetings.

In another move the council decided to remove the firearm restriction at Tangle Ridge Golf Course saying that although the club house sells alcohol, it is not considered a bar that by law requires the restriction on guns.
