Amateur Radio License Classes Announced

Beginning September 15, the Southwest Dallas County Amateur Radio Club along with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2010 S. Carrier Parkway, are offering study classes for persons interested in obtaining their amateur radio license.

Ben Barber, an amateur radio operator with the cub and the church, said the only cost for the classes is the required $15 FCC license exam fee.

“Amateur radio is a hobby as well as for emergency communications,” Barber said. The purpose behind these classes, he said, is to get individuals licensed so in the event of an emergency there will be radio operators available to provide communications. He pointed out that during the recent earthquake Virginia, cell phone service went out, but amateur radio was able to provide communications.

With the City of Grand Prairie holding a meeting on September 12 to form a Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) organization for licensed operators, Barber said, RACES is a way for those licensed to serve the community.

Barber said persons interested in the classes must make a reservation by September 10. He can be contacted at 972-262-3114 or via email.

Classes are from 7-9 p.m. September 15, 22 and 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2010 S. Carrier Parkway.
