Two Drown in Jet Ski Accident

After an extensive search on Sunday and Monday, Grand Prairie police lake patrol officer recovered the bodies of Juan Carlos, 32, of Grand Prairie and Erick Lara, 13, of Mexico, Tuesday morning in Lake Joe Pool, victims of a Jet Ski accident on Sunday.

Sergeant Chris Chopin, Lake Patrol supervisor, said officers found a jet ski floating in the middle of the lake, north of Estes Point with no one around it at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. After about two hours of investigation, officers located family members and friends at Lynn Creek Park who reported Lara, a visitor on vacation from Mexico, and Carlos left the park earlier on the Jet Ski without wearing life jackets.

Lake officers along with fire department personnel searched the shoreline of Estes Park and the north shore from the dam to Lynn Creek Park and were unable to locate the victims on land.

Due to the extensive search area, approximately 2 to 3 miles of water surface, the search team was unable to pin point a good location to deploy divers. Boats using Side Scan Sonar were not able to locate any likely areas to dive on Sunday. Search efforts continued on Monday and into Tuesday when the bodies were found.

Both victims were taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiners Office.

The drowning appears to be accidental where life jackets were not worn as required by state law while operating a Jet Ski.

This is the 3rd and 4th drowning at Lake Joe Pool this year.
