Mike Powell a firefighter/paramedic assigned to fire station number 8 was recognized as the City of Grand Prairie Employee of the Month for July at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting.
In his recommendation, Lieutenant R. Covington wrote Powell was the only paramedic on a crew that was the first to arrive at a call on May 19 where a man was having chest pains.
The patient was conscious, alert and experiencing severe chest pains when Powell began his assessment. Before Powell could attach any medical equipment to complete his assessment, the patient went unconscious and lost all signs of life.
Powell took the lead and began administering CPR. When other firefighters on the scene took over administering CPR, Powell set up advanced life saving procedures.
Another team of paramedics arrived and the patient, who was unconscious, had no pulse, and no measurable blood pressure, was transported by ambulance to Baylor Irving Hospital.
Throughout the transport to the hospital, Powell continued as the lead paramedic and administered CPR
When the ambulance arrived at Baylor Irving, the patient had a pulse and measurable blood pressure.
Doctors performed a surgical procedure and the patient is now recuperating. The doctors credited Powell and the other firefighters/paramedics with saving the patient’s life.
