Tobacco-free North Texas Hosts Town Hall Meeting

Tobacco-free North Texas (TNT), a community coalition, will host a meeting to be held on July 14, 2011, at 6:30PM, at the Ruthe Jackson Center.

The town hall meeting will address tobacco use and its effects on the body, cessation resources, secondhand smoke exposure, and the benefits of a smoke-free community.

Featured speakers will include:

Patricia Shull – Director of Health Services for Grand Prairie ISD, Public Health Advisory Committee Member
Judge Chad Bull – Grand Prairie Municipal Court, IMPACT Grand Prairie Policy Chair
Officer Greg New – Grand Prairie Police, IMPACT Grand Prairie Member
Adam Philyaw – Tobacco Prevention Specialist for the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Tobacco-free North Texas staff member, Vice-Chair of IMPACT Grand Prairie
There is no risk-free level of exposure to tobacco smoke. Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke causes immediate harm to the human body, triggering physical changes that lead to cancer, heart attacks, lung disease and many other serious illnesses. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, acute respiratory infections, ear problems and more severe asthma. Eliminating smoking in indoor spaces fully protects nonsmokers from exposure to secondhand smoke.

Second-hand smoke is a public health issue than can be addressed by a community and its citizens. TNT helps by providing education about tobacco-free communities. RSVP for the Town Hall meeting by July 12 at aphilyaw@dallascouncil.org or call 214.379.5738.
