Teen Critically Injured in Street Racing Crash

A Grand Prairie teen is in critical condition in the Intesive Care Unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas after an accident Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of Corn Vally Road that police said was caused by street racing.

Adriana Camarillo, 18, a backseat passenger in a 2000 Volkswagen GTI driven by Manuel Mondragon, 18, was trapped in the over turned car and had to be extricated by firefighters. She was flown by a CareFlite helicopter to Parkland Hospital.

Police said Mondragon was driving northbound on Corn Valley racing racing a 2002 Ford pickup driven by Austin Swatsell, 17. Mondragon lost control of his vehicle while passing a slower car, skid through the soutbound lanes, over a curb, and struck a tree overturning the Volkswagen.

Mondragon and a front seat passenger, America Fernandez, 18, were transported by Grand Prairie Fire Department ambulance to Methodist Dallas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Swatsell and his passenger Haki Howard, 17, was not injured. Both provided police with statements and were released.

The investigation into the crash continues, police said. Racing on highway charges may be filed on both drivers.
