Parents Camp Out for Spots at New Arts Academy

Parents began lining up outside Garner Elementary School at 2:00 p.m. Friday to wait for the 8:00 a.m. opening Saturday to make application for their children to attend the new Garner Elementary Fine Arts Academy for the 2011-2012 school year.

The Garner Fine Arts Academy will feature a rigorous curriculum that will accommodate extended Arts instruction in addition to 30 minutes of physical education daily.

Mike Largent, who was the first in line, said he wanted to make sure his daughter who is intensely interested in art, has the opportunity to be in the academy’s art curriculum. He said it was going to take some extra effort on his part to drive his daughter, who currently attends Austin Elementary, across town but feels the quality education offered at the academy is well worth his extra effort.

Marla Hernandez said she got to Garner early because she felt by morning there would be a large crowd trying to make application and she wanted to make sure her daughter has the opportunity to attend the academy.

“When I read about the curriculum here [Garner Fine Arts Academy] and all it was going to offer, I just knew this would definitely be a great opportunity for my daughter,” Hernandez said.
