Grand Prairie Officer Takes First Place in Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Challenge

Grand Prairie Police Officer Wes Bement recently earned two first-place awards during the 2011 Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Enforcement Challenge. Bement competed with officers from several other municipalities and Department of Public Safety troopers in a series of commercial vehicle inspections, a written test and personal interview. Bement took first place in the Municipal Officers category and first place in the Passenger Bus category.

By inspecting more than 500 vehicles each year, Grand Prairie’s CMV Enforcement Unit works to keep roadways clear of dangerous vehicles and promote safety in the trucking industry. Grand Prairie’s enforcement program is also leading the way for other Texas cities to do the same. Bement has been instrumental in helping Longview, Killeen, Mansfield, Grapevine, Hurst and Euless start their own CMV safety enforcement programs.

In 2010, Grand Prairie officers placed 65 commercial vehicles “out of service” until necessary repairs could be made, issued 147 citation for hazardous commercial vehicle violations and placed 10 drivers “out of service” because of violations to Federal Department of Transportation regulations.

Grand Prairie’s unit is an active member of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) and recently joined the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), an international not-for-profit organization, which provides an opportunity to partner with other jurisdictions and public safety agencies dedicated to highway safety and security.
