GPHS Senior Wins Car for Perfect Attendance
Twelve GPISD 10-12 grade students recognized for their attendance were randomly drawn for a chance to win a new car Thursday at the culmination of the district’s Every Child, Every Seat, Every Day attendance incentive program that began in January.
With twelve keys on a table but only one that would start the car; each student selected a key to try in the car’s ignition.
Grand Prairie High School senior Luis Martinez was the first to try a key and his key started the engine not only winning the car, but also winning $200 in gasoline courtesy Texas Trust Credit Union and a free meal a week for a year at Chic-fil-A Carrier Towne Crossing.
The attendance incentive program was created with two purposes:
- To keep students in class where they have the best chance to learn
- To increase attendance which increases revenue to the district
Since its beginning in January, the district’s attendance rate has increased 2 percent which represents approximately $2 million.
Amber Danford of Texas Trust Credit Union said the credit union got behind the program because it really believes in the school district’s Every Child, Every Seat, Every Day program. “You can only learn by attending school,” Danford said.
“Next year we’re hoping that we can maybe give three, maybe four cars away,” said Graff Chevrolet General Manager Wesley Spence. The fourth car would be for a teacher with perfect attendance.
