Argument leads to shooting, car chase and arrest

An argument between two men Thursday afternoon at the Sugar Creek Apartments led to a shooting that injured one and the arrest of the suspect after a brief car and foot chase with Grand Prairie police.

Police said Jayson Lee Steptoe, 30, and Curtis Smith, 21, both residents of the Sugar Creek Apartments, became involved in an argument outside an apartment at 940 Lazybrook Lane around 2:45 p.m. Steptoe went inside his apartment, returned with a handgun and shot Smith as he sat in a car.

Smith got out of the car, ran from Steptoe who continued to fire his gun as he chased Smith. After running out of ammunition, Steptoe got into a Chevrolet Suburban and fled the complex.

A Grand Prairie police officer spotted the Suburban a short distance from the complex. There was a brief car chase until Steptoe jumped from the car and fled on foot into an apartment at the Sunrise Vista Apartments, NW23rd and Dalworth.

Police setup a perimeter and a sergeant talked Steptoe into surrendering without incident.

Police spokesman Detective John Brimmer said Steptoe has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Smith was driven by his girlfriend to Arlington Memorial Hospital where he was treated for two gunshot wounds to the leg.
