Horse and rider killed in collision with truck

A Grand Prairie man and the horse he was riding died at the scene Friday night when they were struck by a pickup.

Fernando Giron, 40, was riding the horse in the 700 block of East Oakdale Road around 9:30 p.m. when he was struck by a Ford pickup that was traveling eastbound.

The driver of the pickup, Salvador Herrera-Robles, 33, a citizen of Mexico, and two passengers in the pickup fled the scene on foot. Police later arrested Herrera-Robles about one-half mile from the crash scene. The two passengers were not located.

Police determined Herrera-Robles was speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision. He is currently in the Grand Prairie Jail charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Failure to Stop and Render Aid.

This is the 6th traffic fatality in Grand Prairie this year.
