Grand Prairie ISD Principal Selected as Texas National Distinguished Principal Finalist

Susan Meyer, principal of Crockett Fifth Grade Center was recently selected as a Texas National Distinguished Principal (NDP) finalist by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA).

The NDP program promotes PreK-8 educational excellence and focuses on the fundamental importance of the school principal. The program honors principals who exhibit extraordinary leadership, commitment to their students and staff, service to their communities, and contributions to the profession, including their professional associations.

“At the helm of every successful school is a successful principal,” TEPSA Executive Director Sandi Borden said. “Suzy has a reputation for turning around low-performing schools and Crockett is a prime example of her ability to create a collaborative learning environment where students succeed.”

Focused on student achievement, Meyer believes in building relationships and enhancing instruction. She has successfully taken two Academically Unacceptable, Title I schools to Recognized performance in a short amount of time, and she has led a campus reconfiguration project in order to successfully create a technologically advanced fifth-grade academy focused on math and science.

Meyer and her fellow National Distinguished Principal finalists will be recognized at the TEPSA Awards Reception and Banquet Wednesday, June 15, in Austin.

Each year, Texas recognizes one middle level National Distinguished Principal who represents Texas in Washington, D.C. The award recipient, who is announced in May, also receives a check for $10,000 thanks to generous donations from Horace Mann and Pearson. This year TEPSA received 95 nominations for the award. After a rigorous reading process, in which applicants shared their educational philosophies and accomplishments both in and out of the classroom, a peer-review committee selected 12 finalists who showcased their achievements during a school visit by a team of educators. Criteria for selection of the principals are set by the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the U.S. Department of Education. The Texas program is supported by Horace Mann and Pearson. Founded by educators for educators,

Horace Mann offers a full line of products tailored specifically for educators and their families. Educating 100 million people worldwide, Pearson is the global leader in educational publishing, providing scientifically research-based print and digital programs to help students learn at their own pace, in their own way.

Since 1917, TEPSA has served Texas principals and supervisors. TEPSA has more than 5,800 members. These administrators supervise more than 150,000 teachers who direct the activities of more than 2.5 million PreK-8 school children.
