“Feet Don’t Fail Me Now!” plays the Uptown

Rhythmic Circus brought their groundbreaking production, Feet Don’t Fail Me Now!, to the historic Uptown Theater Saturday night.

The production showcased their technical capacity as dancers and explored rhythm through percussive dance to a wide array of musical genres.

Slight Risk of Severe Weather Back in Forecast

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth said there is a slight risk of severe storms containing large hail, damaging winds, and the possibility a tornado for Grand Prairie and the North Texas area Saturday evening and night.

A slow-moving, vigorous upper level disturbance will move out of the Rockies and slowly over the Plains Saturday night, pulling a cold front gradually across the Red River Valley late.

Three Robbed in Front Yard

Grand Prairie police are asking for the public’s help in identifying three suspects that robbed three individuals in the front yard of a house on Ferncrest Ct.

Police said the robbery occurred on April 7 between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m.

The suspect driving a 4 door PT Cruiser followed a woman into the neighborhood and stopped at the house were the victims were outside playing cards. The suspects displayed a handgun and robbed the three individuals of wallets and cell phones.

April Concerts in the Park Finale

The Island Breeze Band closed out the April Concerts in the Park series Friday night at The Summit serving up the finest in steel drum and Caribbean. Their steel pan melodies mixed with the rhythms of the Caribbean transformed The Summit into a tropical mini-island.

Airogs to Host “Party at the Park” – Meet Players, Taste Park’s New Food Menu

The Grand Prairie AirHogs will host “Party at the Park” on May 5 at 6:00 p.m. at QuikTrip Park at Grand Prairie. The event is free to the public and will showcase the new food and beverages that will be served at QuikTrip Park during the season. It’s also an opportunity for baseball fans to meet and greet the players that will make up the 2011 Grand Prairie AirHogs.

The event will feature a “Taste of QuikTrip Park” with a new food court that includes:

  • Mexican food
  • Italian food
  • Bar-b-que
  • Fish and chips
  • As well as ballpark staples such as hot dogs and hamburgers

Dangerous Severe Weather Possible Today

One more period of thunderstorms is expected for Grand Prairie today and tonight.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth said the potential for severe thunderstorms is high, and today could be a potentially dangerous severe weather event for parts of North Texas.

Severe thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and tonight, especially along and east of the Interstate 35 corridor. Large, hail, damaging downburst winds, and tornadoes will all be possible.

Stay informed with the weather today for watches or warnings to be issued.

Severe Storm Risk Again Today

Grand Prairie could see another round of severe thunderstorms today.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth predicts the greatest risk of severe storms will be a little farther to the east than the last few days, mainly along and to the east of I-35.

The atmosphere is expected to be more volatile today. Storms with very large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes are possible.

The National Weather Service advises everyone in the North Texas area to stay informed of the latest weather information today.

Severe Thunderstorms Possible Sunday and Monday

Grand Prairie could see another round of strong to severe thunderstorms once again this afternoon and evening.

There is a chance of thunderstorms across all of North Texas this Sunday afternoon and overnight, but areas northwest of a Goldthwaite to Ennis to Emory line will have the best chances. Large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes will all be possible.

Thiskyhasnolimit Wears Down Gladding in Texas Mile

Cathy and Bob Zollars and Mark Wagner’s Thiskyhasnolimit, trained by Steve Asmussen, fought determinedly through the stretch to win the 15th running of the Grade 3, $200,000 Texas Mile, for 3-year-olds and upward over a fast main track at Lone Star Park on Saturday. The 16,571 in attendance represented the fourth largest Texas Mile Day crowd in track history.

With Justin Shepherd aboard, who was released from the hospital on Friday night after being treated for a staph infection in his leg, and then given medical clearance to ride on Saturday, the bay son of Sky Mesa settled into ideal tracking position behind fractions of 24.28, 47.85, and 1:11.72. With early pacesetter Gladding in his sights at the top of the stretch, Thiskyhasnolimit dug in through the lane and outdueled that rival to prevail by a half-length. It was seven lengths back to Dreaminofthewin in third. The final time was 1:37.28.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Gold Award recipient Jamese Broadnax and her team were recognized Friday by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Regional Administrator for outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship. The award-winning project is on display at the Dallas Arts District Earth Day Fair through Saturday.

“Not Dream Girl but GREEN Girl,” was a day-long conservation workshop created to offer hands-on tips and techniques for the community to help enact environmental change in day-to-day lives. Led by Broadnax, the team invited community members to participate in several stations from creating natural beauty products to building herb gardens out of recycled tin cans. Additionally, the troop hosted a speaker from Coca-Cola’s recycle team and recruited several area car dealerships to provide demonstrations on energy efficient cars.

Since 1971, the President of the United States has joined with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to recognize young people across the U.S. for protecting our nation’s air, water, land, and ecology. It is one of the most important ways EPA and the Administration demonstrate commitment to environmental stewardship efforts created and conducted by our nation’s young people.

Grand Prairie ISD Principal Selected as Texas National Distinguished Principal Finalist

Susan Meyer, principal of Crockett Fifth Grade Center was recently selected as a Texas National Distinguished Principal (NDP) finalist by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA).

The NDP program promotes PreK-8 educational excellence and focuses on the fundamental importance of the school principal. The program honors principals who exhibit extraordinary leadership, commitment to their students and staff, service to their communities, and contributions to the profession, including their professional associations.

Arts Council Finishes April Concerts in the Park Series

The Grand Prairie Arts Council finished its April Concerts in the Park series Friday night at The Summit with a performance by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Brass Ensemble.

In its eleventh year, the popular musical series that features concerts by a variety of local artists each Friday nights in April, moved this year from the Turner Park Gazebo to The Summit at Central Park drawing record crowds.

AirHogs Name Shreveport Skipper as New Field Manager

The Grand Prairie AirHogs announced Thursday that Ricky VanAsselberg has been named the team’s field manager for the 2011 season. VanAsselberg comes to Grand Prairie after two years as the manager of the American Association champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains.

“I’m thrilled about getting the chance to manage the AirHogs,’’ said VanAsselberg. “I know the folks in Grand Prairie are excited about the 2011 season. It’s a great area for baseball. I think the fans will really enjoy watching this team play.”

VanAsselberg led the Captains to the 2010 American Association title by sweeping Sioux Falls in the finals. The Captains finished the regular season with a 58-37 record. In 2009, VanAsselberg led the team to a 48-48 record – a 22-game improvement from the previous season.

Construction to Begin Soon on Parkland Clinic

Construction is expected to begin late next month on the 33 thousand square-foot Parkland Hospital Clinic to be built at 801 Conover Dr., former location of the Grand Prairie Police station.

It’s expected to take a year to build the clinic that is estimated to serve 40,000 patients per year.

City Unveils Master Plan for City Hall Campus

Council Members were briefed Tuesday on the recently completed master plan that redesigns the City Hall campus.

The study looked at forecasted building and space needs in five to seven years and a twenty year outlook.

“We felt like we needed a master plan for our facilities just like we have a master plan for other things,” City Manager Tom Hart said.

AirHogs Name Vice President/General Manager

The Grand Prairie AirHogs announced Tuesday that Craig Brasfield has been named the team’s Vice President and General Manager. Brasfield comes to Grand Prairie after two years as the VP/GM of the American Association champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains.

“I’m excited about the opportunity with the AirHogs,” said Brasfield. “This is such a great baseball area. I’m looking forward to getting involved in the community and realize how important the AirHogs are to the baseball fans in Grand Prairie. The AirHogs fans can expect a lot of exciting changes at QuikTrip Park in 2011.”

McDonald’s Nationwide Hiring Day

McDonalds across the country held a hiring day Tuesday to get more than 50,000 applicants for jobs at local restaurants. Persons interested in applying can go to any McDonalds or complete an application online.

Members of the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce Branding Irons got the opportunity Tuesday to visit the McDonalds located at 3031 W. Camp Wisdom Rd. to see firsthand the restaurant’s operations and hiring process. The restaurant expects to get more than two hundred applications Tuesday for its 5-12 openings.

Tornado Watch issued for Tuesday Evening and Night

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Grand Prairie effective 2:20 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Tornadoes, hail to 4 inches in diameter, thunderstorms wind gusts to 70 mph, and dangerous lightning are possible.

Persons should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

Hot Today with Chance of Storms

Grand Prairie could see the hottest temperatures so far this year today with a high around 94 degrees.

Relief is in sight, as a cold front moves through this evening. There is a chance of severe storms forming along the front as it moves through the city this evening. The best chance for storms will be to the east though.

Highway 161 Frontage Road at Mayfield to Close

Beginning April 25, the southbound frontage road of State Highway 161 at Mayfield Road and at IH-20 will be closed for about four months for bridge construction.

The northbound frontage will remain open during the construction.

Lone Star Park Draws Over Fifty Thousand Fans Opening Weekend - Highest Since 2004

Lone Star Park concluded opening weekend of its 15th Spring Thoroughbred Season with a 16 percent gain in attendance and 10 percent jump in on-track live betting compared to 2010 business levels.

Bolstered by post-race performances from the Randy Rogers Band and Ted Nugent, Lone Star Park attracted 50,471 fans opening weekend. The sixth largest opening weekend attendance since the track opened for live racing in 1997, and the largest since 2004 when 55,531 fans attended Lone Star Park’s opening weekend festivities. A total of 43,358 fans attended Lone Star’s opening weekend in 2010.

One Killed in High-Speed Crash

Grand Prairie Police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred around 10:00 PM Thursday evening on Highway 360 at Riverside Pkwy.

Sergeant Eric Hansen, Traffic Division supervisor, said the driver of a 2005 Suzuki Forenza, traveling northbound on SH 360 at a high speed, lost control of the vehicle, struck the outside guardrail, and flipped over onto the frontage road.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene.

Lydia’s Last Step Wins 2011 Season Opener at Lone Star Park

Richard W. Penn’s Lydia’s Last Step, trained by J.R. Caldwell, won the 15th running of the one-mile $50,000 Premiere Stakes in front of a crowd of 8,624, a 1.3 percent increase over the 8,512 that attended opening night at Lone Star Park in 2010.

With Bryan McNeil in the irons, the four-year-old bay son of Spanish Steps dictated the tempo on his own terms through fractions of 23.86, 47.78 and 1:12.67. A length in front at the top of the stretch, Lydia’s Last Step widened his margin through the lane before reporting home two and three quarter lengths in front of post-time favorite Coyote Legend. The final time of the race was 1:39.95.

Severe Weather Possible Thursday

A dry line will approach the I-35 corridor around mid afternoon Thursday. Gusty Southwest winds behind the dry line will result in elevated to extreme fire weather conditions across the west.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the dry line mid to late afternoon. These storms will have the potential to produce damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes.

Students Host Birthday Bash

More than 300 Grand Prairie High School students threw a big birthday party for twenty-one children ages 4-16 who reside at Texas Pythian Home.

Texas Pythian Home is a non-profit facility in Weatherford that houses children whose families are unable to provide ongoing care and basic needs.

Body Found at Joe Pool Lake

Grand Prairie Police and Fire recovered the body of an unidentified man found floating in the water near the dam at Joe Pool Lake Tuesday afternoon.

Detective John Brimmer, spokesman for the Grand Prairie Police, said a fisherman spotted the body around 1:30 p.m. and contacted police.

Horse and rider killed in collision with truck

A Grand Prairie man and the horse he was riding died at the scene Friday night when they were struck by a pickup.

Fernando Giron, 40, was riding the horse in the 700 block of East Oakdale Road around 9:30 p.m. when he was struck by a Ford pickup that was traveling eastbound.

The driver of the pickup, Salvador Herrera-Robles, 33, a citizen of Mexico, and two passengers in the pickup fled the scene on foot. Police later arrested Herrera-Robles about one-half mile from the crash scene. The two passengers were not located.

Concert in the Park brings Western Swing to The Summit

The group Shoot Low Sheriff, an authentic Western Swing band, played Friday night at the Grand Prairie Arts Council’s April Concert in the Park at The Summit.

The group, inspired by classic Western Swing bands, combined strings, horns, and piano to recapture the sounds that swept Southern dancehalls in the thirties and forties.

City Council and School Board oppose redistricting plan

A proposed redistricting plan that would eliminate the Texas House District that takes in most of Grand Prairie, District 106, and divide the city into as many as 4-5 districts, has met with opposition from both the City of Grand Prairie and the Grand Prairie Independent School District.

On Monday, the two unanimously passed a joint resolution that was delivered to Austin urging Representatives to keep House District 106 so the more than 123,000 Dallas County residents could retain a Representative who resides in or is largely affected by the voters of Grand Prairie.

Outlet mall construction to begin in May

Paragon Outlets announced Tuesday at the City Council Briefing session that construction on the long delayed outlet mall to be located near Interstate 20 and Great Southwest Parkway is scheduled to begin in early May. The mall is expected to be completed by late summer to early fall 2012.

Originally the outlet mall was a 2008 project of Prime Outlets set to open in 2009. Economic conditions and the sale of Prime Outlets to Simon Properties in 2009 put the project on hold.

Firefighters and Police Officers recognized at City Council meeting

At Tuesday night’s Grand Prairie City Council meeting, City Manager Tom Hart recognized several Firefighters and Police Officers for their outstanding actions in conjunction with two separate incidents involving sick individuals.

Firefighter Chad Hill was named the city’s employee of the month for his work that saved the life of a critically ill person.

On January 7, Hill was assigned to an ambulance at fire station #3 when he and his partner Jason Laman were dispatched to a call that a woman was chocking.

The Grand Prairie AirHogs announced Tuesday that the team has been acquired by Southern Independent Baseball L.L.C. (SIB). The ownership group resides and works in the Metroplex. Gary Elliston, Chairman of the Board of SIB, is the senior founding partner of DeHay & Elliston L.L.P. in Dallas. Elliston becomes the Chairman of the Board of GP Baseball Club L.L.C.

“I’m very excited about acquiring the AirHogs,” said Elliston. “This is a great opportunity for us as well as the baseball fans in the area. We are really looking forward to the 2011 season.”

Scott Berry, President of SIB, is managing partner of DeHay & Elliston L.L.P. in Dallas. Berry is now the President of GP Baseball Club L.L.C.

“We can’t wait for the 2011 season to begin,” said Berry. “Gary and I love the fact that we have a team right in our own backyard. I look forward to working with the Grand Prairie community in bringing a championship to the area. The City of Grand Prairie has been great to work with and we plan on playing baseball at QuikTrip Park at Grand Prairie for many years.

Paws for a Cause brings pets to The Summit

Paws for a Cause attracted pet owners with their animals of all sizes to The Summit Saturday.

The event to benefit the Grand Prairie Animal Welfare Fund and the Humane Society of North Texas featured raffles, pet tricks, costumes, and owner-pet look-alike contest. Also, there were vendors, entertainment, and experts on hand to give pet owners advice.

"Mother Load" plays at the Uptown

Mother Load, the hilarious one-woman comedy based on performer Amy Wilson’s own experience as the mother of three children, played twice at the Uptown Theater Saturday.

Saturday, the Soroptimist International of Grand Prairie recognized nine high school and middle school girls in the Grand Prairie ISD for their outstanding character, community service and leadership.

Each month the Soroptimist Club honors the winners with a certificate and at the end of the year one girl from each high school is chosen Girl of the Year and awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Volunteers build new community garden at Barbara Bush Elementary

On Saturday, dozens of volunteers took part in a joint Keep Grand Prairie Beautiful and Grand Prairie ISD project to help build a forty raised bed community garden at Barbara Bush Elementary School, 511 E. Springdale.

The workers used cinder blocks to construct the beds that were filled with a special soil mix.

Child seriously hurt in hit and run accident

A three year-old child is in serious condition at Fort Worth Cook Children’s Hospital after being hit by a hit and run driver early Saturday morning.

Police said the child was struck shortly after midnight while crossing the on-ramp to State Highway 360 from the southbound frontage road near SW Green Oaks Blvd.

According to witnesses police said, the child was struck by a white pickup while crossing the on-ramp with other family members. The driver of the pickup left the scene after striking the child.

Police quickly nab suspect in fast-food robbery

After a lengthy foot chase around Kennedy Middle School, Grand Prairie police Thursday night captured the lone suspect only minutes after he robbed the McDonalds at 102 West Pioneer Parkway.

Police spokesman Detective John Brimmer said Aaron Eugene Green, 20, entered the McDonalds before 10:00 p.m. He displayed a handgun, robbed the restaurant of an undisclosed amount of cash, and fled on foot.

One of the first arriving patrol officers spotted Green, who matched the suspect’s description, in a field near the McDonalds.
