Parks Department wins three awards at state conference

The city of Grand Prairie Parks and Recreation Department brought home a record-setting three awards from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society State Conference held in McAllen on March 4.

The awards were:

Facility/Design Award for The Summit – “Best New Recreation Facility”
Planning Award for Central Park – “Best New Planned Park Site”
Lone Star Programming Award for Step Up to Health Regional Day Camp Development – “Best New Recreation Program in State”

The Summit is Grand Prairie’s new 60,000-square-foot activity center for adults ages 50 and older. The facility features a group exercise room, fitness area, walking track, indoor swimming pool, water vortex, gym for basketball and volleyball, classrooms, a 100-seat movie theater, café, outdoor patio, locker rooms with saunas and more.

Grand Prairie’s new 172-acre Central Park features a series of lakes with a walking trail, boardwalk and bridges. The park is the site of city festivals, including a concert in the park series this spring.

The Step Up to Health Regional Day Camp was a summer camp health and fitness program for children ages 5-12. Grand Prairie Parks Department staff invited summer camps from Duncanville, Euless and Arlington to join Grand Prairie campers for a one-mile walk through Grand Prairie’s Mike Lewis Park, climbing on a rock wall, bounce houses and a free healthy lunch.
