Farmers Market opens new season

With cold weather still hanging on, the Grand Prairie Farmers Market ended its winter break Saturday, opening for the 2011 season.

Despite the chill, hundreds of customers came out to pick up some of the fresh vegetables, baked goods, sauces, seasonings, meats, and other goods sold by local businesses.

Longtime Farmers Market vendor Tony Vann, who farms in Montague County, had a good offering of vegetables. He said most of his produce was hothouse raised, but he did have some cold tolerant vegetables such as broccoli and beets from his farm. He added with warmer weather coming he will soon begin planting other vegetables.

Leah Miller, along with her husband and two sons, operates The Country Store Bakery in Grandview, was on hand with a large supply and selection of fresh baked breads and fried pies.

Miller, who admitted she is very particular about the quality of her products, relies on trusted family members for help in the bakery. She added that because the bakery is local and sells fresh at farmers markets, it uses no additives or preservatives, only the highest quality ingredients and butter go into their goods.

“Our breads are baked on Friday to sell on Saturday,” Miller said.

The Farmers Market at 120 W. Main St., is open 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturdays, March –December. For more information and a calendar of weekly events, the visit www.gptx.org/farmersmarket.
