Reduced flood insurance rates for city

Residents, business and residential renters, and business owners in Grand Prairie can now enjoy a 10 to 20 percent reduction in flood insurance premiums because of the city’s active participation in the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).

This means those policyholders with the existing discounted rates will now receive the additional five to10 percent discount and those who purchase a new policy may be eligible for up to 20 percent discount.

In addition to lower premiums, the rating program helps to reduce the threat of damage from flooding, according to officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

"The flood insurance program rewards communities for implementing programs and policies that protect their residents from flooding,” said FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Russell. “Grand Prairie’s higher regulatory standards, public education outreach, property acquisition programs and open space preservation initiatives, among other activities, have earned the city lower premiums as a CRS Class 6 Community.”

"This is great news for Grand Prairie homeowners," said Mayor Charles England. "With all our rivers, streams and creeks, flooding has been a problem in the past, but our staff has worked hard during the past decade to alleviate flood-prone places to make a safer Grand Prairie."
