Four-alarm fire destroys warehouse
A large column of smoke was still visible Tuesday morning as Grand Prairie firefighters continued to pour water onto flames of a four-alarm fire that destroyed a warehouse overnight in the 1000 block of Post & Paddock.
The fire that broke out around 7:45 p.m. Monday, kept Grand Prairie firefighters assisted by Arlington Fire Department busy all night as they battled to control the blaze in the 400,000 square-foot warehouse that was occupied by a private mailing firm and a business that stored canned drinks.
Fire officials said the warehouse was equipped with a sprinkler system, but it was unable to suppress the fire.
Some of the walls to the structure have collapsed and demolition of the building will begin today.
Fire crews will remain on the scene for several more days as the fire burns out.
No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials believe the fire started in a storage area involving pallets of metal cans stacked 24 feet high. At one point the stack of cans collapsed on firefighters battling the blaze.
”Wading out from the collapse felt like quick sand,” said Fire Chief Clif Nelson. “Everyone got out safely, our equipment did what it was supposed to do, our personnel worked together to ensure the safe evacuation of the team.”
