Apartment complex closes, residents forced to move
With burst water pipes sending streams of water through the parking lots and into street, units in uninhabitable condition, residents of the Barrington Apartment, 701 S. Great Southwest Parkway, on Monday were loading their belongings into truck, cars, and vans, forced to move because the complex is to close.
Amy Sprinkles, spokesperson for the City of Grand Prairie, explained that the apartment’s owner is in bankruptcy in a New York court. On February 8 the city issued the bankruptcy court a citation to fix the numerous safety, health, and building code violations at the property or close the complex. The city deemed the property as uninhabitable.
On Friday afternoon, the trustee in the bankruptcy sent a letter to all the residents saying the complex is to be closed and everyone would have to move immediately.
With the numerous health and safety violations, Sprinkles said residents at the complex are encouraged to move as soon as possible, but the city will give them a reasonable amount of time to relocate.
She added that a property management company, hired by the bankruptcy court, is refunding rent payments, plus giving a stipend to assist occupants move.
Although a fence around the complex goes up on Thursday, a gate will be installed so remaining residents can have access to their apartments.
