The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday released its detailed 2010 Census population totals for Texas showing Grand Prairie’s population has grown 37.6 percent since 2000.

The city’s new population was placed at 175,396, an increase of 47,969 in ten years.

Grand Prairie moved from the 17th to the 15th largest city in the state, surpassing Pasadena and Brownsville.

Reduced flood insurance rates for city

Residents, business and residential renters, and business owners in Grand Prairie can now enjoy a 10 to 20 percent reduction in flood insurance premiums because of the city’s active participation in the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).

This means those policyholders with the existing discounted rates will now receive the additional five to10 percent discount and those who purchase a new policy may be eligible for up to 20 percent discount.

In addition to lower premiums, the rating program helps to reduce the threat of damage from flooding, according to officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
