Winter Storm Warning for Tuesday – travel could be treacherous

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Grand Prairie for sleet, snow, and freezing rain effective from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

An upper level storm system will move across tonight and early Tuesday and will bring widespread rain to the area. An Arctic cold front will arrive early Tuesday. Between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. temperatures will drop below freezing and the rain will change over to sleet and snow. Around 1/2 inch of sleet is expected. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow are also possible.

Temperature will fall into the 20s and lingering precipitation and moisture is expected to freeze on all road surfaces by midday, making travel treacherous if not impossible.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Grand Prairie for freezing rain and sleet effective from late tonight through Tuesday afternoon.

An upper level storm system will move across Monday night and Tuesday and bring widespread rain to the area. An Arctic cold front will arrive late Monday night and Tuesday morning bringing some of the coldets tempratures in years to the area. By 7a.m. Tuesday, temperatures will drop into the 20s behind the cold front and the rain will change over to sleet and freezing rain.

Arlington man year's first traffic fatality

Grand Prairie police are investigating the traffic collision on State Highway 360 near Riverside Parkway that killed an Arlington man.

Sergeant Eric Hansen, Traffic Division, said at about 10:30 a.m. on January 27, Keith Lanard Curry, 39, of Arlington, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer southbound on SH 360 at a high speed when he hit the rear end of a 1994 Honda Civic he was attempting to pass. Curry then lost control of the Blazer, and left the roadway traveling down an embankment. The Blazer overturned several times, ejecting Curry from the vehicle.

Wintry weather possible next week

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth advised there is a potential of wintery precipitation for Grand Prairie around Tuesday of next week.

A cold front is expected to move through North Texas on Monday, with temperatures dropping below freezing Tuesday. Precipitation should develop as an upper level system moves toward the region bringing a chance of wintry mix. A slight chance for some light snow may linger into Tuesday night.

School district to conduct public hearing on AEIS report

The Grand Prairie Independent School District Board of Trustees will conduct a public hearing to discuss the 2009-2010 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) report as part of its regular meeting on February 10, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the GPISD Education Center, 2602 S. Belt Line Road

The AEIS report is published annually by the Texas Education Agency. The report includes student performance and profile information concerning students, finances, and staffing.

Finalists for the 2010-2011 GPISD Teacher of the Year were announced at a reception sponsored by the District and the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce at the Education Center. The winner will be announced February 22 at the State of the City Dinner hosted by the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce.

Holiday DUI enforcement nets 15 arrests

This past Christmas and New Year’s holiday period, Grand Prairie Police, utilizing a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), stepped up its DUI enforcement that resulted in 15 suspected intoxicated drivers taken off the streets.

The TXDOT grant paid overtime for additional officers to patrol the streets targeting traffic and DUI enforcement, Sergeant Eric Hansen, Traffic Division Supervisor said.

Blaze damages three condo units

It took firefighters from Grand Prairie and Arlington about two hours Monday morning to control a three alarm fire that heavily damaged three units at the Castillian Condominiums, 600 East Avenue J.

Assistant Fire Chief C. J. Grippin said fire crews were dispatched to the complex at 7:22 a.m. and when firefighters arrived, found a unit engulfed in flames. He added, one resident was transported to the hospital suffering with respiratory problems.

The Improvised Shakespeare Company opens at the Uptown

The Improvised Shakespeare Company opened its first of four performances at the Uptown Theater Friday night.

With nothing planned-out, rehearsed, or written, the five actors created a unique, fully improvised play in Elizabethan style based on a suggestion from the audience. Complete with “thee’s” and “thou’s,” the off-the-cuff comedy used the language and themes of William Shakespeare.

Council approves gas drilling ordinance

In an unusual turn of events, property owners and gas well drillers came together Tuesday night calling for the Grand Prairie City Council to table the proposed Gas Drilling and Production ordinance so the city, gas drillers and residents could have more time to study the comprehensive revisions to the current ordinance.

The City Council meeting that lasted almost 4 hours had dozens of speakers addressing the council expressing their concerns about gas drilling in the city.

Steelcase closing Grand Prairie plant - 200 jobs cut

Office furniture maker Steelcase, Inc. announced Wednesday that its Grand Prairie plant located at 1800 S. Great Southwest Parkway is one of three manufacturing facilities the company is closing. Production from the Grand Prairie facility will be moved to other Steelcase locations in North America.

In a press release, company president and CEO James P. Hackett said, “We continue to make improvements to our industrial system, which have left us with excess capacity to support current and anticipated future demand.” He concluded, “Actions such as these are never easy, but reflect the need for the organization to be as fit as possible in the highly competitive environment in which we operate.”

Arts Council announces Market Square art contest

Grand Prairie’s Farmers Market has partnered with the Grand Prairie Arts Council to host an art show and contest Saturday, May 21, at Farmers Market, 125 W. Main St. The art will be displayed 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Best of Show will be awarded in adult and student categories. All hanging media will be considered including, but not limited to oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed-media, drawing and photography. Artwork should focus on the theme “Farmers Market” and/or “Market Square.” The exhibition is open to middle school and high school students in Grand Prairie and adults.

City wants design ideas from youth

The City of Grand Prairie opened its design contest for the annual city holiday ornament inviting the youth of Grand Prairie to submit designs for this year’s ornament.

Youth 18 years and younger who live in Grand Prairie are eligible to enter. A panel of judges will select the winner.

The winning entry will be featured as the 2011 Holiday Ornament and the winner will receive one complimentary ornament.

Winter Storm Watch cancelled

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has replaced the Winter Storm Watch for heavy snow it issued Saturday for Grand Prairie with a Winter Weather Advisory from 10:00 a.m. Sunday to 9:00 a.m. Monday.

The Weather Service advised that it will take some time for the temperatures to fall in North Texas and that much of the early precipitation will fall as rain. The area could experience some snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches through Sunday night mainly along and east of Interstate 35. The heaviest snowfall will generally occur north of Interstate 20, east of the Metroplex, ending this evening.

Winter Storm Watch - late tonight through Sunday

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a Winter Storm Watch for heavy snow which is in effect from 3:00 a.m. Sunday through Sunday evening for Grand Prairie.

A powerful storm system moving into far west Texas will continue east today and affect North Texas late tonight. Areas of rain are expected to rapidly develop across central and south Texas overnight as moisture surges northward. As the storm system crosses North Texas during the day Sunday, temperatures are expected to fall to near or just above freezing. Rain is expected to transition to snow beginning Sunday morning and continuing into the afternoon.

School district’s Deputy Superintendent to lead Willis ISD

Grand Prairie ISD’s Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Bret Jimerson, has been selected as the lone finalist for Superintendent of the Willis ISD.

Willis, a district of 6,200 students, is located approximately 50 miles north of Houston.

A special meeting of the Willis ISD Board of Trustees is set for January 5 to formally vote on Dr. Jimerson’s appointment.

Arctic front to bring cold weather

A strong cold front should arrive in Grand Prairie on Monday bringing much colder weather for next week.

High temperatures January 11 - January 14 should only be in the 30s, while lows should range from 15 to 25 degrees.
