Toy run draws more than a thousand bikers

Sunday, more than a thousand motorcycle riders from across the Metroplex came to Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie for the 25th annual The Big Texas Toy Run to benefit Dallas and Tarrant county mental health, mental retardation centers.

Bikers who participated in the run brought thousands of toys that are to be distributed to underprivileged and challenged children all over the Metroplex.

The ride, that was limited to a thousand bikers, had to turn away hundreds of bikers from the ride that began at Lone Star Park, ended at Gilley’s in Dallas. Although not permitted to participate in the ride, bikers showed their generosity, dropping off toys and cash donations, before driving to Dallas on their own.

“Bikers are really wonderful people,” said Isabel Burke, a biker and self-described soccer mom with a mini-van. “They have the biggest heart and are willing to help out.”

Burke, who normally rides in the toy run, decided this year to bring a van load children that included hers and some neighborhood children to Belt Line and Interstate 30 cheer the riders that included her husband.
