Zavala Elementary honors veterans with breakfast
For the fourth consecutive Veterans Day, students and faculty at Zavala Elementary school invited Grand Prairie and surrounding area veterans to the school for breakfast.
The dozens of veterans that came to the school not only got a good breakfast, they were individually recognized by students at a school assembly.
Assistant Principal Karen Tesmer said this past week the students have been getting ready for Veterans Day by creating artwork, making greeting cards to send to veterans deployed, and writing about what our country’s veterans mean to them.
The day’s keynote speaker Joe McClenny of Grand Prairie, is a World War II veteran with 44 missions as a flight engineer/gunner in a bomber in the Asia-Pacific theatre.
McClenny kept the students entertained as he enlightened them about life on board a bomber in combat. He talked in detail about August 9, 1945 while on a mission to bomb airfields in the area of Nagasaki, Japan he witnessed the explosion of the atomic bomb that ended the war.
