The Summit wins 2010 ICAA Innovators Award

The International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA) has selected the city of Grand Prairie Parks and Recreation Department to receive a 2010 ICAA Innovators Award for its outstanding attention to the needs of the active adult in planning, building, opening and operating The Summit, the city’s new active adult center.

ICAA leads, connects and defines the active-aging industry. Recognizing creativity and excellence in active aging, ICAA’s annual awards program honors innovations that are leading the way, setting new standards and making a difference in the lives of older adults. These efforts support healthier, more vital living by targeting any or all of the seven dimensions of wellness (social, emotional, vocational, spiritual, intellectual, physical and environmental).

“We are thrilled with this award that recognizes our outstanding new facility,” said Rick Herold, Parks and Recreation Director. “Since opening in May, we already have more than 5,000 members at The Summit. From socializing to working out, entertainment to learning, our members are vital, active, vocal examples of the new active adult.”

The Summit, 2975 Esplanade, opened in May 2010 for active Grand Prairie residents age 50 and older. Overlooking the lakes of Central Park, the 60,000-square-foot Summit offers a huge fitness center with cardio equipment and weights, a ballroom, 100-seat theater, classrooms, basketball court, 1/10 mile indoor track, aerobics room, teaching kitchen, greenhouse, outdoor covered patio with fireplace, game room, café, wine bar and a salt-water aquatic center with a resistance vortex, lap swim and spa. Grand Prairie residents age 50-64 may join for $200 a year and Grand Prairie residents age 65+ may join for $50 a year. The facility was funded with a 1/8 cent sales tax approved by voters in 2007.

“With the right opportunities and supportive environments, people of all ages can strive toward better health, enjoy new challenges, and continue to learn and grow,” says Colin Milner, ICAA’s founder and CEO. “Through the innovative approaches used in the design and planning of The Summit, older adults have a new opportunity to improve health, wellness and quality of life.”

The Summit will receive a crystal award of recognition from ICAA. In addition, an in-depth profile will appear in ICAA’s flagship publication, the Journal on Active Aging®, in 2011.
