Police Chief Glen Hill to retire

Glen Hill, Grand Prairie’s Police Chief for the past 12 years, announced on Friday he is stepping down as one of the area’s longest-serving police chiefs with his retirement on January 1, 2011.

However, Chief Hill will remain with the city through 2011 as a consultant working with the police department on its accreditation process, a historical project, and personnel issues that require his testimony, said City Manager Tom Hart.

Hart said Michael Shaw, the department’s most tenured Deputy Chief, will take over leadership of the department immediately and will be appointed interim chief on October 23.

"Chief Shaw has my full confidence in leading the department forward as we decide how to fill the position permanently," City Manager Tom Hart said in a press release. "We will take the time necessary to plot our course. We have a great department and will be focusing on innovation, strengthening unity, communicating with all levels of the department and increasing morale as we move forward. My goal is to create a police department that sets the standards in the profession, becomes the department for which all other police officers want to work, and exudes camaraderie."

Angela Luckey-Harris, President NAACP Grand Prairie Branch, who over the years has pressured Chief Hill to boost minority recruitment and to address personnel issues within the department, said in an email, “The Grand Prairie NAACP Branch concur[sic] with Chief Glenn[sic] Hill, Grand Prairie Police Chief stepping down as police chief in Grand Prairie Texas. He was divisive for the community and needed to step down from his position.”

City Manager Tom Hart said Luckey-Harris’ allegations had “zero” role in the decision. Hart went on to say Chief Hill has the highest moral character, “He went overboard trying to work with Angela Luckey[Harris].”
