Multi-faith prayer vigil calls for release of Baha’i prisoners

Followers of the Baha’i faith along with members of various other faiths from across the metroplex came together at Grand Prairie’s Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon to pray for seven Baha’i members recently sentenced in Iran to twenty years in prison, accused of “propaganda activities against the Islamic order.”

Warriors lose close game in Gopher-Warrior Bowl - Gophers lose in Mansfield

Cedar Hill stopped South Grand Prairie on the Longhorn’s 12 yard line with 22 seconds left in the game to hang on to a 28-23 victory Friday night in the Gopher-Warrior Bowl.

The Warriors scored early taking a 16-0 lead into the second quarter, but the Longhorns came back scoring 22 points. The Warriors held a 23-22 lead at halftime.

Schools kick-off Red Ribbon Week

The Grand Prairie Independent School District kicked-off Red Ribbon Week Monday at a news conference at Dubiski Career High School that featured Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Hull, Mayor Pro Tem Ruthe Jackson and students speaking against drug use.

The news conference showcased student efforts to curb drug abuse, to empower students to make positive, healthy choices that create and maintain a safe and drug-free learning environment in Grand Prairie schools.

“The Heritage” art exhibition features mother-daughter artists

The beautifully restored historic Anderson Building was filled Sunday with sixty pieces of art from the latest collection of recognized mother-daughter artists Sharon Elliott of Grand Prairie and Felicia Hunt of Baton Rouge, La. The show included a reception, entertainment and a live auction with a portion of the proceeds going to Alley’s House.

Presented by Carlos and Carla, LLC and curator Michelle Bruins of Frisco, the exhibition titled “The Heritage” showcased an artist mother who has passed her gift of art and creativity along to her daughter showing the significance of family, faith, and love.

Severe thunderstorms possible this weekend

An upper level disturbance will move from southwest to northeastacross the region today. Lift from the upper level disturbancecombined with a moist and unstable atmosphere will result in scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms over North Texas.

The best chances of rain Saturday will be over the northwestern parts ofthe area, closest to where the disturbance tracks across.

Chamber welcomes Patty Shack Burgers

At Friday’s ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce Branding Irons for new chamber members, Kyle Bryson, an owner of Patty Shack Burgers, 510 E. Avenue K, described it as “the Marble Slab® of burgers.”

Bryson said Patty Shack Burgers is fashioned after an old-time burger shack with signs and hubcaps on the walls, but with one big difference, a signature dish. He said the “Build your own dang burger” is a one-third or one-half pound burger with up to 3 toppings mixed into the patty instead of on top and then grilled on a “well-seasoned” flat top grill.

Update on crash that killed Arlington teen

Grand Prairie police concluded its investigation into the accident on October 15 on State Highway 360 that killed Kelsee Williams, 13, of Arlington.

Sergeant Eric Hansen, Traffic Division, said investigators determined that a 15 year-old female passenger seated next to Williams in the back seat of the vehicle, may have bumped the driver or the steering wheel as she reached to change the radio station causing the driver to lose control.

Williams, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over.

Heroic firefighter named Employee of the Month

Grand Prairie’s City Manager Tom Hart recognized Firefighter/Paramedic Jared Tadlock as the city’s Employee of the Month at Tuesday night’s City Council Meeting.

Tadlock who is assigned to station three was recognized for his heroism rescuing an unconscious woman trapped in a burning house on July 3.

Film crews in town shooting for TV show

Film crews converted the former Grand Prairie police station into a prison to shoot an upcoming episode of the TV show "The Good Guys."

Film crews were in town Tuesday shooting for an upcoming episode of the Fox action drama “The Good Guys.”

The crews converted a portion of the former Grand Prairie police station on Conover into a prison and later in day shot scenes at The Summit.

Two AirHogs named to 2010 All Independent Team

Baseball America announced today that two Grand Prairie AirHogs, Infielder David Espinosa and Outfielder Greg Porter, were named to its 2010 All Independent Team. Espinosa was named to the First Team and Porter to the Second Team.

Police Chief Glen Hill to retire

Glen Hill, Grand Prairie’s Police Chief for the past 12 years, announced on Friday he is stepping down as one of the area’s longest-serving police chiefs with his retirement on January 1, 2011.

However, Chief Hill will remain with the city through 2011 as a consultant working with the police department on its accreditation process, a historical project, and personnel issues that require his testimony, said City Manager Tom Hart.

Arlington teen killed in crash on SH 360

A single-vehicle traffic collision that occurred at around 10:00 PM Friday night on State Highway 360 near the Grand Prairie-Mansfield border killed Kelsee Williams, 13, of Arlington.

Police said a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Jaccob Washington, 16, of Arlington was traveling northbound on SH 360 when Williams, who was in the back seat, reached for the steering wheel, possibly to reach the radio controls on the steering wheel, causing Washington to lose control and roll the vehicle.

Pipeline accident damages home

An accident at a construction site at Arkansas and State Highway 161 sent piece of pipe flying in the air Friday afternoon damaging one house.

Assistant Fire Chief C. J. Grippin said no one was injured in the accident that occurred at about 12:40 p.m. when a device used to scrub pipelines malfunctioned, hurling an estimated four foot piece of pipe approximately 500 feet and through an exterior wall of the home in the 1000 block of Stream Drive.

Middle school student struck by car while crossing street

A 12 year-old girl who is a sixth grader at Arnold Middle School was injured Thursday morning when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street to wait on a school bus.

The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Dickey Road and Clarice Street when a 2006 Toyota 4Runner traveling eastbound on Dickey Road struck the girl as she crossed Dickey Road.

Initially the driver of the Toyota stopped, but then fled the scene.

The girl was transported by ambulance to Methodist Dallas Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

On hand were City Councilmen Mark Hepworth and Bill Thorne along with State Representative Paula Pierson to get a first-hand look at GEEP’s environmentally conscious disposition process of all types of electronic components.

American Association adds four clubs

The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball Clubs Commissioner Miles Wolff announced on Wednesday the addition of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Gary SouthShore RailCats, Kansas City T-Bones and Winnipeg Goldeyes to the league for the 2011 season. The clubs were admitted at the annual meetings in Grand Prairie, TX.

The teams were formerly members of the Northern League, all for the past nine seasons or longer, and combined to win its previous six championships. In 2010, the four clubs drew nearly 900,000 fans to their games.

Man gets 20-year prison sentence for child pornography

James Cagle, 43, of Grand Prairie was sentenced on October 8 by Chief U.S. District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater to 240 months in federal prison, following his guilty plea in July 2010 to one count of transporting and shipping child pornography, announced U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas.

Judge Fitzwater ordered that the 20-year sentence run consecutive to the state sentences that Cagle is currently serving for convictions including indecency with a child by contact and indecent exposure. Cagle was also ordered to serve a lifetime of supervised release.

Fall Indie Fest – three day festival

Fall Indie Fest, the one-of-a-kind independent music and film festival, ended its three days of non-stop entertainment on Main Street Sunday evening.

More than 55 bands and musicians from across Texas along some of the country’s top artists as featured performers played on three stages. Visitors got to hear an almost continual concert featuring a variety of music.

During the festival, the Uptown Theater returned to its roots as a movie theater where more than 40 feature length, short films, trailers, and music videos from independent film makers were shown.

Police respond to two fatal accidents on Sunday

Grand Prairie recorded the year’s 11th and 12th traffic fatalities in two separate accidents on Sunday.

The first accident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. in the 6000 block of Lake Ridge Parkway, adjacent to Lynn Creek Marina.

Jerry Glenn Riddle, 63, of Arlington was riding a 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Lake Ridge when he lost control, fell off the motorcycle, and struck his head on a guard rail post. No other vehicles were involved.

Warriors overpower Mansfield Timberview

South Grand Prairie scored on its first three possessions Friday night against Mansfield Timberview to go on to a 55-0 win in the Gopher Warrior Bowl.

The Warriors dominated the game scoring twenty-one points in the first and third quarters. In all, the Warriors scored eight offensive touchdowns while the Warrior defense intercepted two Timberview passes.

Fall Indie Fest begins Friday

Setup for Fall Indie Fest begins at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning when Main Street between SE 3rd and Center is closed so crews can begin erecting stages and attractions for the three day music and film entertainment extravaganza that begins that evening. Main Street will remain closed until the festival’s conclusion on Sunday.

The festival, a celebration of Texas film makers and musicians, will screen more than 40 feature length, short films, trailers, and music videos, with more than 30 musicians and bands from across Texas performing on three stages.

Groundbreaking for city’s twenty-eighth Habitat for Humanity Home

Manhattan Construction, the firm that built Central Park, The Summit, and the Public Safety Building, in partnership with the City of Grand Prairie and Habitat for Humanity kicked off construction Monday on the 28th Habitat home to be built in Grand Prairie for deserving families.

Bruce Fields, Manhattan Project Executive, said after working in Grand Prairie with its projects, “We absolutely just fell in love with working in this community and we wanted to give back to the community, to stay involved.”

Police department to receive grant to hire officers

The Grand Prairie Police Department was awarded a grant of $2,331,021 through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program, under the Department of Justice’s COPS program to help hire additional officers for community policing and homeland security efforts, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Friday.

The funding will go directly to law enforcement agencies to hire additional law enforcement personnel to increase and strengthen their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.

NAACP says police department has failed in minority recruitment

Prior to the retirement ceremony on Thursday for Grand Prairie Police Officer Tanara Martin, the department’s only African-American officer, the NAACP, Grand Prairie Branch held a press conference on the steps of the Public Safety Building to call for the hiring of more minority police officers.

Angela Harris, president, said the NAACP has complained many times about the lack of minorities on the department and in particular the lack of African-American females. She said the NAACP has provided the department with career recruitment fair dates at colleges and universities with high African-American enrollment.

Police continue investigation into Thursday’s fatal shooting

Grand Prairie Police released additional information today about the shooting Thursday in the 4900 block of S. Highway 360 that killed one man.

Police spokesman Detective John Brimmer identified the victim as Shannon Jerod Sneed, 33. He added that Uraina Coleman, 24, was arrested at the scene for investigation of murder. Police also recovered the weapon believed to be used in the shooting.
