Gophers win - Warriors lose

The Grand Prairie Gophers stopped a determined W. T. White late in the game to preserve 35-28 win in the Gopher-Warrior Bowl Friday night.

Gopher quarterback Tommy Alvarez started the scoring with a 4-yard run in the first quarter, Alex Rostro kicked the point. On White’s next possession, Gopher defensive back Dewayne Fleeks picked a fumbled and took it back 47-yards for a score, Rostro kicked the point after.

White came back scoring touchdowns in the first and second quarter to tie the score.

A 30-yard Alvarez pass to wide receiver Patrick Palmer setup an Alvarez 1-yard run for the score in the second quarter, Rostro kicked the extra point.

With the Gophers kicking from the White 30-yard line because of two personal foul penalties assessed White. The Gophers kicked on-side and recovered the ball on the 10-yard line. Alvarez then connected with Devante Lacy for a 15-yard touchdown pass and Rostro’s kick was good putting the Gophers up 28-14.

White scored again in the second quarter making the score at halftime 28-21 in favor of the Gophers.

Neither team could score in the third quarter.

Running back DeQuan McCoy scored Grand Prairie’s final points with a 2-yard run with 3:45 left in the game, Rostro kicked the point after.

White scored again with 1:25 left in the game and kicked on-side. The ball was recovered by the Gophers who ran the clock out.

South Grand Prairie lost its game Friday night to North Mesquite in Mesquite 21-32.
