Fire investigators were still on the scene Friday afternoon investigating the cause of a house fire in the 700 block of Finland that killed a disabled woman.
The Grand Prairie Fire Department was called around 10:00 a.m. when neighbors saw smoke and flames coming out of a window of the residence.
Lt. Randy Willis, Fire Investigator, said the first arriving units found one bedroom fully involved. The victim was found near the front door when firefighters made entry into the structure. Firefighters also found two dogs and a cat dead in the house.
The victim, who fire officials declined to identify, was transported by ambulance to Parkland Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A neighbor, who requested not to be identified, said she first saw a large cloud of smoke in front of the house, then flames erupted out of a window. She addied that she also heard what were believed to be explosions inside the house, “I thought the walls were going to come out.”
Assistant Fire Chief C. J. Grippin said this was the third injury fire in two weeks in the city. He said on July 3 firefighters rescued a woman at a house fire in 400 block of Forest Hill and neighbors got a man out of a travel trailer on fire in the 4000 block of East Main on Thursday morning.
