Fire damages church

A fire in the roof area of the Calvary Baptist Church, 401 W. Church, Monday night caused minor damages to the church, according to fire officials.

Lt. Randy Willis, Fire Prevention Investigator, said the Grand Prairie Fire Department was called to the church at 7:10 p.m. He said firefighters confined the fire to the roof line area with minimal damage to the structure.

Lightning from Monday’s storm may have caused the fire, Lt. Willis said. He added, witnesses reported hearing a loud clap of thunder prior to the fire and investigators found no other source of ignition.

Andrew Little, Communications Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church, said the damaged building houses the children’s church and ministry along with the church’s office complex. He said the children’s ministry will have to temporarily relocate, but the offices could re-open in a few days after an electrician checks the building’s wiring.

He continued, the church secretary has setup office in the Family Life Building with the remainder of the staff taking space where ever it could be found.

With the church's sanctuary in a separate building, Sunday’s services will go on a usual with the exception of the children’s ministry being moved, Little said.
