Daniels Elementary hosts summer wind fair academy for students

More than fifty students of Daniels Elementary spent two weeks after school let out attending a summer academy studying wind as an alternative energy source.

The academy, made possible through REAL School Gardens who provided material to build and study wind turbines with a grant from the Motorola Foundation, gave students an opportunity to study real life problems along with improving their reading, math, and science skills.

Kyle Damon, Science and Technology Facilitator at Daniels, said during the summer academy students built and studied the results of wind turbines in various applications. He said the students had reading assignments, a research projects, and made a presentation about the results of their research.

A student, Lus Delossantos, 10, said she decided to attend the academy because she thought it would be fun, could be with her friends, and studying wind energy sounded interesting.

“It sounded sort of fun,” said Toby Damon, 9, when he learned about the academy. He added that during the academy his project studied using wind power to pump water and learned “that almost anything can be powered by wind.”
