Accident on I-30 injures U. S. Trade Ambassador

Ron Kirk, U. S. Trade Ambassador and former Dallas Mayor, was injured Wednesday morning when the vehicle he was driving was struck by a ladder that was in the roadway of Interstate 30 near Belt Line Road.

Grand Prairie Police said Kirk was driving west bound on the freeway around 11:00 a.m. when a ladder that had been dropped on the roadway was struck by a tractor trailer traveling ahead Kirk causing it to fly into the air and come down through the windshield Kirk’s car, striking him in the left arm.

Kirk was transported by Grand Prairie Fire Department ambulance to Methodist Medical Center in Dallas for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. His passenger, Robert Mathews, 64, of Dallas, was not injured.

Police report the origin of the ladder is unknown and there are no markings on it to identify the owner. It apparently had fallen out of another vehicle a few minutes prior to Kirk coming through the area.

At the time of the accident police officers were already responding to the area after receiving a call of a ladder lying in the freeway.

The 18-wheeler that struck the ladder did not stop.
