Former resident named acting president of California college

Barbara Jones Kavalier, of Grand Prairie, has been named acting president of one of the largest community colleges in California and the nation. Dr. Kavalier has served as Vice President of Student Services at San Diego Mesa College since January 2008. She will serve as president until an interim president is named.

A native Texan, Dr. Kavalier is a graduate of Grand Prairie High School. Her father, Bill Jones, lives in Grand Prairie and is a member of the Association of Grand Prairie Artists, past member of the Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals, and Board liaison to the Grand Prairie Arts Council.

Fire damages church

A fire in the roof area of the Calvary Baptist Church, 401 W. Church, Monday night caused minor damages to the church, according to fire officials.

Lt. Randy Willis, Fire Prevention Investigator, said the Grand Prairie Fire Department was called to the church at 7:10 p.m. He said firefighters confined the fire to the roof line area with minimal damage to the structure.

Two alarm blaze damages home

Grand Prairie firefighters with help from the Cedar Hill Fire Department fought a two alarm fire Friday evening that severely damaged a home in the 2900 block of Bandera.

The fire that erupted around 4:30 p.m. began in an upstairs bedroom.

Former Postal employee sentenced for role in mail theft conspiracy

James Olabode Laniyan, 51, of Grand Prairie, a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service at the Dallas Main Post Office, was sentenced June 22 by U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis to 60 months in federal prison, the statutory maximum, for his role in a mail theft conspiracy, announced U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas. Judge Solis also ordered that Laniyan, pay $302,620 in restitution for disbursement to Discover Card Services and Capital Bank One Bank. Laniyan was ordered to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on July 28, 2010.

Lone Star Park jockeys to play charity softball doubleheader

The jockeys at Lone Star Park will be the featured stars in a number of upcoming events that racing fans are invited to attend to help raise money for the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund, which assists injured and disabled jockeys and their families.

On June 29, the jockeys will be looking to avenge their 10-6 loss to Lone Star Park employees and media in last year’s inaugural Jockey Charity Softball Game, in a doubleheader at QuikTrip Park, home of the Grand Prairie AirHogs. The first game of the 2nd Annual “Rumble at the Park” is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the second game to follow immediately after. Gates at QuikTrip Park open at 6:45 p.m. and a donation of $5 at the gate would be appreciated.

Blueberries now at Farmers Market

Delicious, healthy blueberries will be available this Saturday at the Grand Prairie Farmers Market, Market Square, 120 W. Main St. downtown Grand Prairie.

The Farmers Market, open every Thursday and Saturday from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., offers seasonal fruits and vegetables that are locally grown, as well as eggs, beef, chicken, pork, alfalfa sprouts, soy candles, soaps, baked goods, coffee and organic teas, honey, and more. “Tools for School” begins school supply drive

Grand Prairie drops day-game to El Paso, 11-3

The AirHogs were not able to start a win streak Wednesday to counter the five game skid the ‘Hogs had suffered earlier in the week as they dropped another to last place El Paso, 11-3.

Grand Prairie starter Matt Green went only two-thirds of an inning, allowing five runs on three hits, one of which was a grand slam off the bat of Kyle Nicholes. The Diablos put one more on the board as Adam Deleo went deep to left for his first home run of the season.

City to hold public hearing

The City of Grand Prairie is holding a public hearing on the Cottonwood and Fish Creek Watersheds Flood Protedction Plan, June 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Grand Prairie Development Center, 206 West Church.

The city is jointly participating with the Texas Water Development Board for a Flood Protection Planning Study of the Cottonwood Creek and Fish Creek watersheds. The study location extends from the confluence of each creek with Mountain Creek Lake upstream to the beginning of each creek in the City of Arlington Texas. In Grand Prairie, this includes areas bounded approximately by Jefferson Boulevard to the north, Mountain Creek Lake to the east, Camp Wisdom Road to the south, and State Highway 360 to the west. This meeting will focus on final findings from work completed to date.

AirHogs snap losing streak with 7-1 win over Diablos

The ‘Hogs found a much needed win against the last place El Paso Diablos Tuesday night by the score of 7-1, snapping their franchise record five-game losing streak.

A bit of managerial magic seemed to do the trick, as field manager Pete Incaviglia dropped Aaron Garza from the two-hole to seventh leading to a two run homer in the bottom of the second. Garza found his stride after an unproductive streak at the top of the order.

Diablos ground AirHogs 6-4

The AirHogs’ midseason woes continued Monday as the El Paso Diablos handed the ‘Hogs their fifth straight loss by the score of 6-4.

AirHog starter Ryne Tacker began the night hot, pitching five innings of no-hit ball. The ‘Hogs offense provided the run support scoring two in the third off a fielder’s choice from Joe Spiers and a sacrifice fly from David Espinosa. The two reached base on a single and a walk to begin the inning.

Another fielder’s choice off a double play from Chad Gabriel scored Greg Porter for the ‘Hogs third run of the game.

Grand Prairie Wellness Center receives $25,000 emergency grant

The Grand Prairie Wellness Center was awarded a $25,000 grant from The Meadows Foundation, of Dallas, Texas, towards emergency operating funds to continue providing health care services to uninsured and low-income individuals.

“We are deeply grateful to the Meadows Foundation for this significant funding which will help us to continue providing these services to those most in need,” Chuck Poffenbarger, Board President, said. “Each year, the center provided urgent and preventive medical care to more than 7,000 medically vulnerable children, adults and families. About $11,400 a month is needed for medical expenses. Those needs continue to grow.”

Ribbon cutting ceremony opens Public Safety building and The Summit

In back-to-back ribbon cutting ceremonies Friday, Grand Prairie officially opened two new buildings at Central Park, the Public Safety Building and The Summit.

With hundreds attending the ceremonies including city and state officials, Mayor England cut ribbons that opened the 150,000 square foot, $50 million Public Safety Building and the 60,000 square foot, $22 million Summit.

Remembering Sgt. Gregory Hunter

“Today is a day we will always remember,” Grand Prairie Police Chief Glen Hill said to the friends and family of Sergeant Gregory Hunter who gathered near the spot where he was killed on June 18, 2004 to remember the slain police officer.

Sergeant Hunter was shot and killed while he and another officer investigated a suspicious vehicle at the Walmart, 2225 West Interstate 20.

Saltogs land AirHogs 15-2

The Lincoln Saltdogs exacted their revenge on the AirHogs, routing Grand Prairie 15-2 Thursday night at QuikTrip Park. The ‘Hogs took two games in a row against Lincoln, outscoring the Saltdogs 20 to three, despite dropping games one and four. With the loss, the AirHogs drop to second place with a record of 18-14, one game behind Shreveport-Bossier.

The Saltdogs began the night with a bang, scoring four runs in the top of the second of two, two-run homers from Shawn McGill and Brandon Jones off AirHogs starter Jarod Plummer. Plummer ended the night early going 4.1 innings and giving up seven runs on six hits.

Daniels Elementary hosts summer wind fair academy for students

More than fifty students of Daniels Elementary spent two weeks after school let out attending a summer academy studying wind as an alternative energy source.

The academy, made possible through REAL School Gardens who provided material to build and study wind turbines with a grant from the Motorola Foundation, gave students an opportunity to study real life problems along with improving their reading, math, and science skills.

Airhogs lick Saltdogs, 11-1

The AirHogs got their revenge Tuesday against the Lincoln Saltdogs with a dominating 11-1 win at QuikTrip Park.

The ‘Hogs blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs, only two being earned.

The scoring began off a double to left center by Aaron Garza scoring Juan Camacho. Garza would cross the plate after a throw from centerfield sailed into the Lincoln dugout giving Garza the extra base after the Ben Petralli single.

Arts Council announces open audition for musical

Grand Prairie Arts Council announced open theatre auditions for its production of Little Women, the Broadway Musical are set for July 30 from 7-10 pm and July 31 from 11 am-2 pm at the GPAC Studio, 116A East Main Street, Grand Prairie, 75050 - next door to the Uptown Theater.

Based on Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women, the musical follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. This wonderful narrative features all the original characters brought to life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart.

Airhogs snap losing streak with 10-3 win over Pelicans

Grand Prairie snapped its four-game losing streak in a big way as the AirHogs routed the Pensacola Pelicans, 10-3, at QuikTrip Park. The AirHogs (16-12) also remained in first place in the South Division ahead of the Shreveport-Bossier Captains.

AirHogs starter Matt Green played a big role in helping snap the losing skid by pitching seven strong innings. The right-hander raised his record to 3-0 by scattering five hits and allowed only one unearned run. He also struck out three and walked two.

Grand Prairie ousted by Pensacola, 5-2

Pensacola extended Grand Prairie’s losing streak to four with a 5-2 victory Saturday night at QuikTrip Park. It is the longest losing streak for the AirHogs since the 2008 season.

Grand Prairie (15-12) again jumped out to a lead after Chad Gabriel hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. Gabriel’s hit broke up a pitcher’s duel between Grand Prairie’s Jarod Plummer and Pensacola’s Dane De Valk.

De Valk had struck out six in a little over three innings and Plummer had six strikeouts through three—but after Gabriel’s hit the Pels finally got to Plummer in the sixth.

‘Hogs fall to Pels, 5-4

Pensacola overcame an early three run deficit and defeated the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 5-4, Friday night at QuikTrip Park. It was Grand Prairie’s third straight loss but the AirHogs (15-11) remain in first play in the Southern Division.

The AirHogs jumped on Pensacola starter Jared Gothreaux for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs Greg Porter doubled to left center and came around on Juan Camacho’s single up the middle.

Aaron Garza then followed with a two-run home run to left to make it 3-0. It was Garza’s second homer of the season.

Vigil held for teen missing since 2008


At a vigil held Tuesday evening at Grand Prairie High School for Bridgette Bilotta, Christina Bilotta made an emotional plea that anyone who may know the whereabouts, have information, or may have seen her daughter to come forward with their information to police.

The teen was last seen at Grand Prairie High School on October 8, 2008. She called her mother a few times in the first couple of weeks following her disappearance saying she was unharmed, but has not contacted anyone since 2008.

AirHogs beat the Cats

Grand Prairie RF Aaron Garza cleared the bases with a three-run double as part of a four-run second inning, and the AirHogs held off Fort Worth 4-1.

Garza had three hits on the night and paced the offense in support of starter Matt Green, who picked up the win by pitching 5.2 innings and allowing just one run.

The bullpen tossed 3.1 innings of hitless baseball and closer Geivy Garcia scored his fifth save.

Rotary Club hosts annual golf tournament

The Grand Prairie Rotary Club will host its 11th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday at Prairie Lakes Golf Course in Grand Prairie .

This year's tournament honors Dr. Janelle Bicknell for her commitment to public service and significant contribution to the Grand Prairie community. Since 2000, more than 9,000 students have received over $1,300,000 of dental services via the Grand Prairie Rotary Club's Dental Sealant Program and Dr. Bicknell has been the driving force behind this project.

First place AirHogs win in El Paso

The AirHogs pounded out 14 hits as a team, led by SS Joe Spiers, who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, as Grand Prairie topped El Paso, 10-5.

LF Chad Gabriel also had a good game offensively, going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and three RBI.

C Benji Johnson led the way at the plate for El Paso. He was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.

AirHogs drop Diablos

Grand Prairie scored four runs in the first inning and kept tacking on runs in a 13-7 win at El Paso.

AirHogs 2B David Espinosa kept his average above .400 with a 4-5 night, including his second home run of the season and three RBI. DH Juan Camacho and C Flint Wipke also had multiple hits and multiple RBI.

Grand Prairie starter Ryne Tacker went just four innings, and reliever Edgar Estanga, the first man out of the bullpen, picked up his third win. SS Arnolodo Ponce and LF J.D. Reininger hit home runs for El Paso in the loss.

Diablos take game one against first place Grand Prairie

El Paso took the first game of the three game series at Cohen stadium Friday night against Grand Prairie 12-8. The Diablos have now won two out of their last three games.

The Diablos and the AirHogs brought their sticks out tonight as a total of 20 runs between the two of them would be put up on the board before the night was over. The scoring started in the top of the second inning when the AirHogs hit a two run home run off of Diablos starter D.J. Mattox. The Diablos would answer back immediately during the bottom half of the inning with a Jeff Vincent two RBI double to tie the game. El Paso ended the inning with the lead after a Jonathan Reynoso RBI base hit. Greg Porter would tie things up at three for the AirHogs in the top of the third with a solo blast. The Diablos didn’t flinch as El Paso’s newcomer Kyle Nichols hit the first Diablos home run of the season at Cohen stadium. Nichols bomb over the left field fence would give the Diablos a 6-3 lead. Vincent would finish the inning off with a double that brought Arnoldo Ponce home and gave El Paso a 7-3 lead after three innings.

School district expects to be named “Recognized”

Based on preliminary spring TAKS test scores, the Grand Prairie Independent School District expects to be named “Recognized” for the second time in its history (1999). It will be the first time the District has been rated Recognized under the current TAKS accountability system.

If these preliminary scores hold true, the District will have a total of 32 of its 38 eligible campuses rated either Recognized or Exemplary. Only 5 will be rated as Academically Acceptable with no Academically Unacceptable campuses.

AirHogs fall to Cats, 9-1

The AirHogs managed to stave off a first shutout game of the season in a 9-1 loss to the Fort Worth Cats at QuikTrip Park Thursday.

The Cats began the scoring in the third on a Brian Fryer home run to deep left, followed by a big three run inning the top of the fifth off ‘Hogs starter Luke Prihoda. Three singles and a double from Brenan Herrera tallied the Cats three-spot in the inning.

They scratched out their fifth run on a grounder up the middle in the top of the sixth, then knocked ‘Hogs pitcher Edgar Estanga around in the ninth, scoring two off a double and a triple. One more crossed home plate on a base hit in the six-hole bringing the Cats score to nine.

Police quickly nab three armed robbery suspects

It took Grand Prairie police only a few minutes to chase down and arrest three suspects following the armed robbery of Gibson Pharmacy, 2505 S. Carrier Parkway on Thursday.

Police responded to the robbery at 1:39 p.m. Witness told police that two suspects entered the store and robbed it at gun point of cash and narcotics while a third suspect remained in the get-away-car that was described as a green four door Buick.

Green tosses gem, ‘Hogs fly past Cats 7-1

The AirHogs’ run producing machine was hot Wednesday as the ‘Hogs put up a run in all but two innings, taking down the Fort Worth Cats, 7-1. AirHogs starter Matt Green put up a quality effort and earned his first win of the season, going seven innings giving up only one run on three hits and four strikeouts.

The ‘Hogs began the onslaught in the first inning off a Greg Porter double to the left of the Porter Pool Deck in right field scoring David Espinosa. Porter then sent a fly ball deep to score the ‘Hog’s second run of the night on the sacrifice. He went 2-3 on the night with two doubles to boost his batting lead.

Accident on I-30 injures U. S. Trade Ambassador

Ron Kirk, U. S. Trade Ambassador and former Dallas Mayor, was injured Wednesday morning when the vehicle he was driving was struck by a ladder that was in the roadway of Interstate 30 near Belt Line Road.

Grand Prairie Police said Kirk was driving west bound on the freeway around 11:00 a.m. when a ladder that had been dropped on the roadway was struck by a tractor trailer traveling ahead Kirk causing it to fly into the air and come down through the windshield Kirk’s car, striking him in the left arm.

Record heat expected this weekend

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth reports a ridge of high pressure will build over the Southern Plains through the weekend resulting in very warm temperatures for Grand Prairie.

Afternoon highs are expected to range between 98 and 103 degrees on Saturday and between 100 and 105 degrees on Sunday.

These temperatures, combined with humidity will result in Heat Index values between 102 and 107 degrees over the weekend.

Arlington man dies in motorcycle accident

Grand Prairie police are investigating a traffic accident that occurred about 6:30 Tuesday morning at the intersection of W Main St and SW 14th St that killed Shane Zen, 24, of Arlington.

Police said Zen was riding a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Main when he collided with a 2010 Audi SUV that had been westbound on Main and was turning south onto SW 14th St.

Zen was taken by ambulance to Methodist Medical Center in Dallas where he died at 7:10 Tuesday morning. He was not wearing a helmet.
