Grand Prairie Wellness Center receives grant for dental program

The Grand Prairie Wellness Center was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Catholic Foundation of Dallas to assist with the center’s Dental Program for six months. A portion of this grant was made possible by a distribution from the R. Cardis and Grace DeLee Stubbs Foundation Fund. In addition to the funding, the foundation will prepare a special publicity brochure with color photos for the center to use with its patients and donors. This award was part of over $1 Million distributed to area charities by The Catholic Foundation of Dallas in spring 2010.

Since it's opening in November 2001, the center—located at 1710 Small Street, Grand Prairie, Texas-- has served thousands of low-income families with quality medical and dental services and a total of $2.70 Million in medical and dental services. The needs continue to grow each year.

“This year, the center expects to provide urgent and preventive medical care to more than 6,100 medically vulnerable children, adults and families” Chuck Poffenbarger, Board President, said. “About 7,200 a month is needed for medical expenses. We are deeply grateful to the Catholic Foundation for this significant funding which will help continue our low-cost dental program for families and children. Many patients come to us with the need for urgent dental care, because they cannot afford regular dental visits or yearly exams. Our dental program offers low-cost dental exams in bright and comfortable, recently updated facilities. Having this nice facility is important in giving confidence to our patients.”

“The economy has made it difficult for many of our patients – but also for donors,” Poffenbarger said. “We’re a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. We operate through the generosity of others. Without the help from foundations, corporations and individual donations, we would never have survived the last couple of years.”

The Catholic Foundation of Dallas is a community foundation established in 1955 to promote compassionate charitable giving and stewardship, to serve donors and to help meet the needs of the community.

At Grand Prairie Wellness Center, doctors and nurse-practitioners volunteer their time to provide free medical and low-cost dental services to low-income families, with family income at or below the 125% federal poverty guidelines. Volunteers are also used for in variety of positions. This extensive cadre of volunteer doctors and other medical and administrative personnel allow us to provide health care services for a low cost per patient.
