Art student works to finish decorated cow

With an April 13 deadline looming, Sarah Dinh is putting in lots of extra class and after school time working on the fiberglass cow she is painting for the Fifth Annual Lucerne The Art of Dairy art contest.

The South Grand Prairie High School senior is one of thirty finalists selected from the more than 9,600 entries in this year’s nationwide art contest with the theme “Taste of Moo-sic.”

A first year art student, who likes to draw and work with colored pencils, has done very little painting. She said the contest has made her learn a new medium very quickly.

“It makes me learn really fast because the deadline is so soon,” Sarah said. “It’s kind of like motivating you to work faster and learn more.”

Sarah’s art teacher Barbara Hagle said the project started slowly because Sarah was not accustomed to using paint. Once she learned some techniques of how to properly mix paints, load her brush, things began to move much faster.

“She has really, really poured her heart and soul into painting of this cow,” Hagle said. “She has put in many hours, after school, before school. She’s come during lunch.”

Hagle added that Sarah has also gained the support of the student body. When the fiberglass cow was delivered, rolled down the hallway and put into the art wing, a whole new atmosphere appeared as students cheered Sarah on to complete the project.

The contest’s grand prize is:

$20,000 for the school’s art department
$5,000 to winning student
$5,000 to that student’s teacher

Sarah who plans to attend the University of Texas at Arlington said she is really undecided on her future studies but if she wins, plans to use some of the money for her education. She also would like to take a trip to Germany to visit a friend.

When completed, the decorated cow will be on display at the Tom Thumb, 4215 South Carrier Parkway.

The grand prize winner will be announced in early May. A special web site, www.safeway.com/lucerne, has been created to showcase past winners and contest information and share healthy recipes.
