Grand Prairie Arts Council receives grants for "Target Tellebration"

The Grand Prairie Arts Council announced Monday a partnership with Target Stores in recognition of its efforts to make the arts accessible to children in Grand Prairie.

Target Tellebration, in the Grand Prairie ISD elementary schools, promotes the concept of sharing historical and family stories. Throughout the week of November 16, 2009, Target Tellebration will reach more than 5,500 students in 13 elementary schools with the storytelling idea just prior to the Thanksgiving holidays. Storytellers will include Margaret Clauder as The Bookworm and Singing Bird, and Brett Roberts with Texas Magic Tricks and Tomfoolery.

Storytelling is one of the oldest and most powerful art forms. For thousands of years storytellers have ensured that the wisdom, strength and values of diverse cultures are passed down. Target Tellebration is designed to promote family storytelling, and the Arts Council believes that school-age children should be taught to continue this idea. Tellers instill a love of reading and the art of the spoken word, and promote the central theme of family storytelling.

This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5% of its income to organizations that support education, the arts and safe families and communities. Today that translates to $3 million every week.

“At Target, we are making a real difference every day through our grant-making program,” said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. “We’re proud to partner with the Grand Prairie Arts Council as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work.”

This year’s Target Tellebration has also been expanded to include two family literacy nights at Williams and Marshall Elementary Schools in Grand Prairie, through an additional grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts. Parents and students will enjoy the skillful antics and storytelling devices of Brett Roberts in his Rock n Roll Magic Show and Wild Reading Review.
