Quilt show – part of city’s year-long centennial celebration

More than 90 works of quilt art draped over the pews at the First United Methodist Church Saturday, formed a dazzling display of color and design at the charity quilt show benefiting the Grand Prairie Food and Clothing Co-op.

The show, a part of Grand Prairie’s year-long Centennial celebration, drew admirers from around the area to view the display of quilts ranging from nearly 100 year-old hand made to contemporary machine made works.

Mary Ann Hartzel, Co-op president and an event organizer said she got the idea from a quilt show she once attended that was held inside a church.

“I thought of this and I saw that the city was having their 100th anniversary and were inviting civic groups and organizations to participate. So I thought, this would be a way to combine both the church and the co-op in that celebration to benefit the co-op,” Hartzel said.

The Grand Prairie Food and Clothing Co-op, established in 1992, helps people in crisis situations with temporary help, providing food and clothing.

Hartzel said anyone interested in volunteering or donating to the Co-op can call 972-264-8540.

Many of the show entrants are members of Quilter’s Guild of Grand Prairie. The guild holds its regular monthly meetings the first Monday of each month from 7-9 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie, 310 S.W. 3rd St.
