Grand Prairie gets Low-Cost Spay/Neuter shuttle service

“Don’t be a litter bug” takes on a new meaning as the City of Grand Prairie and Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP) join forces to offer the first low-cost pet sterilization program in the City, aiming to reduce the numbers of unwanted pets put to death each year in the City and be sure that all animals adopted from the City shelter are sterilized. A shuttle service will be offered two times per month, starting on Tuesday, July 14th 2009. Animals will be picked up at the Grand Prairie PAWS Adoption Center at 7:00am, transported to the new state- of- the- art high- quality, high- volume spay/neuter clinic in Crandall TX for surgery and then delivered back to the facility at around 6:30pm for discharge.

According to Bonnie Hill, KCAAP President, the new 5,400 sq ft state- of- the- art clinic is set up to perform over 17,000 surgeries per year; staff with experienced and skilled surgeons and veterinary technicians. KCAAP has two temperature controlled transport vehicles which can accommodate up to 60 animals of varies sizes. “We are so excited to bring this low-cost service to an area in such need. And we are so pleased to be working together with such a dedicated City, as Grand Prairie”.

Costs for the program are determined by weight, sex and species. Cost for dogs are; males $50.50 – $70.50; females $55.50 – $75.50. Costs for cats are males $30 and females $40.

Funds are available to help those who are on government assistance, those that own multiple pets, caretakers of feral cats and those that own dogs over 40 lbs.

The program also provides vaccinations, heartworm tests, heartworm preventative and flea preventive at reduce rates. Texas law requires current rabies vaccination at the time of surgery. If proof can not be provided the animals must be vaccinated for $8.

Local business can become involved by sponsoring the monthly shuttle service. One month sponsorship is $150 and pays for the gas and vehicle maintenance for the day. The company will receive thanks through recognition on the transport vehicle.

KCAAP is a non-profit 501c3 organization which has provided low-cost pet sterilization surgeries and vaccinations as well as free surgeries for the pets of disadvantaged residents throughout Northeast Texas for almost five years performing over 25,000 surgeries. KCAAP’s shuttle services runs 4 days per week picking up animals in 12 different cities.
