Pay the fine or do the time
Today the Dallas County Commissioners announced a zero tolerance plan to apprehend those who fail to pay or dispose of their outstanding traffic citations. Dallas County has over 600,000 outstanding traffic citations representing approximately $200,000 million in fines and fees.
“It is not fair to honest taxpayers that some individuals don’t have to pay their traffic fines while our county is facing a $34 million budget shortfall,” said County Judge Jim Foster.
To aggressively target traffic ticket absconders, Dallas County will implement a 90 day zero tolerance plan where individuals will be taken directly to jail if they have not resolved their outstanding traffic tickets. The county’s policy of releasing individuals to appear at a future court date will be suspended.
“If you do not pay the fine, you will do the time,” said Foster.
