Organization formed to honor slain officers

June, 2004 was a dark month for law enforcement in the DFW Metroplex.  Within a week of each other, Officer Darren G. Medlin of the Grapevine Police Department and Sergeant Gregory L. Hunter of the Grand Prairie Police Department were slain in the line of duty.  Officer Medlin was killed by a drunk driver as he made a traffic stop.   Sgt.Hunter was shot and killed by an armed man in a stolen van.

In the months that followed, the wives of both officers, Gina Medlin and Denise Hunter, formed a bond that continues to this day.  Gina and Denise were aided by national organizations including Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Concerns of Police Survivors, and Guns and Hoses.   In line with these national organizations, Gina and Denise have formed a local organization, “Remember the Fallen”, dedicated to honoring all police officers who have given their lives to keep others safe.  In addition, Denise, and daughter, Erin established a scholarship foundation, with the support of the Grand Prairie Police Department, in their late husband’s/father’s name, which benefits two graduating seniors each annually, one from each high school in Grand Prairie, with $1000.00 scholarships each.

Remember the Fallen will kick off their initial fund-raising events with a motorcycle ride on June 7th followed by a golf tournament on June 12th.   The organization is being joined  by the Grapevine Police Association and the Grand Prairie Police Department in hosting the events.

The motorcycle ride is being sponsored by DFW Honda in Grapevine.  The ride will begin at DFW Honda at 9 a.m. on June 7th.  The final destination has yet to be determined.  In addition to the ride itself, many fun activities are planned.  Those interested in riding in the event, or assisting as a contributor or sponsor, can register or get more information at www.rememberthefallen.org.

The memorial golf tournament will follow five days later on June 12th with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at Bear Creek Golf Club located at DFW Airport.  In addition to golfers, contributors and sponsors for this event are still needed.  Information on the golf tournament is available on the Remember the Fallen website or at www.MiracleGolfConcepts.com.
