Postal Service prepares for last minute tax filers

Courtesy U. S. Postal Service

Millions of Americans wait until the last minute to file their tax returns.  This year is no different.  Tax Night this year falls on Tuesday, April 15 and filers have until 12:00 midnight to drop off their completed returns.  To accommodate last minute filers, selected Post Offices in the Dallas District will be open later than usual on Tuesday, April 15.  This year, the Dallas District is again providing customers three sites for curbside collection until midnight.

Pat Williams, Dallas Postmaster, is urging customers to mail early and obtain their tax forms online where it is quick, convenient and a time-saver at the Post Office when they have the forms ready for mailing.  In the event customers choose to wait until Tuesday, April 15, customers should be aware of the locations and sites for their convenience.

“The curbside collection locations provide added convenience for our customers.  Returns can be dropped at selected sites until either 10:00 PM or 12:00 midnight.  Our customers can be assured that mail dropped at these sites will receive an April 15 postmark.  Although the deadline is Tuesday, April 15, customers are urged to drop off returns as early as possible.  The new parking lot design will help facilitate smooth movement of traffic at the Main Post Office, but we want to urge customers to utilize alternate locations to help reduce traffic congestion and waiting time to deposit tax returns,” said Ms. Williams.

Curbside collections are available until 12:00 midnight at:
  • Dallas MPO                 401 DFW Turnpike         75260
  • Dallas Joe Pool 5521 S. Hampton Rd.    75224
  • Dallas Bent Tree        4475 Trinity Mills Rd.     75287

Collections will be made until 10:00 p.m. at:

  • Airport Mail Center   2300 32nd St. 75261 (at DFW Airport)
Customers who take advantage of curbside drop-off sites should remember the following:
  • Try to drop off as early as possible; as the night goes on, traffic picks up!
  • Pull up as far as possible to the next available collector and try to pull as close to the curb as possible.
  • If your passenger side window is inoperable, you will need to park your vehicle and hand it to a collector; our collectors will not, for safety reasons, be able to come around to a driver’s side window.
  • If you have a dog in the car, please make sure it is under control, to ensure collectors will not be in danger of a bite.
  • Postage is not available for purchase at curbside.  Stamps and other types of postage can be purchased at the Retail window, Automated Postal Center, or vending machine.
The Postal Service offers the following advice to tax filers:
  • Use First-Class postage.
  • Use pre-addressed labels where possible.  Write clearly.  Take special care to ensure that handwritten envelopes are legible, and include a return address.
  • Affix sufficient postage.  One ounce is 42 cents; each additional ounce up to 13 ounces costs an additional 24 cents.
  • Double-check postage.  Weigh any return that feels heavier than one ounce.  Tax agencies do not accept postage due mail; tax returns bearing insufficient postage will be returned – meaning taxpayers may be penalized for filing late tax returns.
  • Avoid the mad rush at the post office.  Mail returns in local collection boxes, but remember to make certain that the posted pick-up time has not passed to ensure returns will have an April 15 postmark.
  • Registered Mail is an excellent choice for customers who send original receipts to tax agencies.
  • Make certain bulky envelopes are securely sealed.
