Lockheed Martin receives $512 million contract

Lockheed Martin has received a $512 million contract to provide the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) to the U.S. Army and to the U.S. Marine Corps.

Work on the contract will be performed at the company’s facilities in Camden, AR, and Grand Prairie, TX, and is scheduled for completion in 4th quarter 2010. Specific quantities of vehicles and rockets were not disclosed.

"The HIMARS system brings much more mobile and lethal dimension to Soldiers and Marines," said Lt. Col. John Chicoli, U.S. Army Precision Guided Munitions and Rockets Product Manager. "HIMARS’ exceptional mobility and transportability, together with the newest evolution of the MLRS family of munitions, bring long-range, precision fires, all-weather, near-vertical impact to theater – greatly reducing collateral damage."

HIMARS can accommodate the entire family of MLRS munitions, including all variants of the Guided MLRS rocket and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles. Designed to enable troops to engage and defeat artillery, air defense concentrations, trucks, light armor and personnel carriers, as well as support troop and supply concentrations, HIMARS can move away from the area at high speed following missile launch, well before enemy forces are able to locate the launch site.

Because of its C-130 transportability, HIMARS can be deployed into areas previously inaccessible to heavier launchers and provides a force multiplier to the modular brigade. It also incorporates the self-loading, autonomous features that have made MLRS the premier rocket artillery system in the world.

DCHHS offers free flu shots

Dallas County Health and Human Services announced today that their clinics will offer free flu shots to children and adults while their remaining supply lasts.

“Our annual influenza surveillance network has detected a rise in flu cases across Dallas County that traditionally marks the official start of flu season”, said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS Director. “In response to the beginning of the flu season, DCHHS will begin offering free flu vaccinations to anyone who would like to still like to protect themselves and their loved ones against the flu,”  said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS Director.

According to the CDC it is especially important for persons at risk of serious complications from influenza and persons who anticipate traveling out of the country be vaccinated. The high risk group includes people aged 50 years and older, anyone with chronic health conditions such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes or HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, health-care personnel who provide direct patient care, household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children, and all children aged 6 to 59 months.

“Traditionally we see a rise in school and work absentees due to flu-like symptoms beginning in late January,” said Dr. John Carlo, DCHHS Medical Director. “This year, we are seeing the same pattern so we know that flu season has officially arrived in Dallas County.”

DCHHS also offers the following suggestions for reducing the spread of the flu: get your flu shot; stay home when you are sick and keep children home when they are sick; avoid close contact with those who are sick; cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve when you cough and sneeze; wash your hands frequently; and avoid touching your nose and mouth.

DCHHS offers flu shots for adults and children, as well as other routine childhood and adult immunizations, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday on the first floor of the DCHHS building, 2377 N. Marine PFC Gabrielle Urias, formerly of Grand Prairie, was recently awarded the Marine Corps Bases Japan, Chef of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2008.

The daughter of Rene and Shannon Hernandez of Grand Prairie is a 2006 graduate of South Grand Prairie High joining the Marine Corps in October of 2006.  She is currently a food services specialist at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan.

The best Marine Corps chefs selected from the Marine Corps Bases Japan compete quarterly for the award.

Typically, Marines are selected to compete for the award several times before winning the competition.  PFC Urias won on her first try after only couple of months at Camp Kinser, her first duty station.

“The fact that she did it her first time shows she’s got a little talent.  She’s got drive,“ said Staff Sergeant Jose Moran, chief chef at Camp Kinser.

“I could not make Easy Mac before I joined the Marine Corps,” PFC Urias said.

Life in the Marine Corps is the fulfillment of a childhood dream for PFC Urias and plans to make the Marine Corps her career.

“When I was little, my dad would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up.  I always said, ‘a Marine.’  I want to give the Marine Corps as much as I can,” PFC Urias said.  “I love it. I love being a Marine.”

Council tables airport terminal matching fund grant

The City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to table an amendment to a grant of matching funds from Texas Department of Transportation for the design of an airport terminal at the Grand Prairie Municipal Airport.

Councilman Rick Sala said in the council briefing session he would like to see some results of a market research, “ One more look if we’re going in the right direction.”

He said that with new technology he wanted to make sure we designed the terminal to go after the market we want to attract to the airport whether that is microjet traffic, a super heliport or general aviation.

Grand Prairie needs to consider future air traffic due the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington and the Super Bowl coming, he said.

With the city’s central location, Grand Prairie could become a destination of choice for microjet traffic and just did not want to miss on this new emerging market, Sala said.

Council approves design renovations for City Council Chambers

The Grand Prairie City Council unanimously approved an amendment Tuesday night to enter into a contract with Komatsu Architecture for design renovations to the City Council Chambers.

In a presentation during the City Council briefing session, Amy Sprinkle, Communications and Marketing Director, said the chambers have only been renovated one time since the construction of City Hall in the ‘70s, that being in 1994.  The 1994 renovation was minor consisting of only reupholstering chairs, new carpet, and painting walls.

The new renovation would address the entire chambers and lobby including:

  • Reupholster chairs
  • New wall treatments
  • New carpet
  • Streamlined speaker’s podium
  • Better monitors for council members
  • Expanded seating for staff members
  • Redesign of entry including reception desk
  • New entry doors

Sprinkle said that the sound system was a separate item and it was already scheduled for an upgrade.

Since the lighting of the chambers was not a part of the design renovation, the City Council adopted an ordinance amending the Capital Improvements Project Budget to include lighting.

Local entertainer packs House of Blues

Kraig Parker an Elvis tribute artist from Grand Prairie performed to a sold out crowd Sunday night at the House of Blues in Dallas.

Oldies radio station KLUV sponsored the show as a tribute to what would have been Elvis’ seventy-third birthday on January 8.

Parker along with his outstanding “Royal Tribute Band” and backup vocalists “The Sweet Sensations” put on a non-stop, two hour, high energy performance as he sang a mix of Elvis hits that chronicled “The King’s” career.  Just as Elvis, Parker took the time to reach out to his adoring fans standing at the stage giving scarves, hand shakes, and kisses.

Parker briefly spoke of Elvis’ career and how even years after his death new songs have been released.  He spoke how technology made it possible for Elvis to appear with Celine Dion in a duet on “American Idol”. This led into a duet with “Sweet Sensation” Genevieve Dew singing “If I Can Dream”.  The beautiful blend of their voices brought the entire crowd to their feet.

Parker again brought the crowd to their feet with his powerful voice singing the classic gospel “How Great Thou Art” and with his closing song, “The American Trilogy”.

An accident Thursday morning put a car into the soon to open Jambu Juice located at 3040 W. Camp Wisdom.

According to a Jamba Juice employee, Jimmy Story, the car was east bound through the strip center parking lot coming from the area of the Starbucks.  It sideswiped another vehicle, veered towards the store, jumped over the curb, and crashed through the store’s glass front.

Story said that he along with some construction workers was inside the store at the time of the accident.  He said fortunately no one inside was near the glass front so there were no injuries.

Although the unidentified female driver and passenger were shaken, Story said they did not appear to be injured.

Located within the original town site of Grand Prairie, the Copeland Home was built in 1902 by B.P. Hale and his wife, Ruth.  The home was purchased by the Copeland family in 1908.

The white clapboard home, styled for the farm-type, small town resident, was designed with a high pitched roof, narrow windows and a back door entrance.  The original five rooms had 12-foot ceilings, a living room, dining room and three bedrooms.  The kitchen and bathroom were originally separate structures from the home.  In 1918, the Copelands remodeled, bringing the kitchen inside, adding a bathroom and enclosing the back porch.  The beautiful oak hardwood floors, interior woodwork, light fixtures, front door, windows and bead-board ceilings painted pink -- Mrs. Copeland’s favorite color -- are original.  The original fireplace was removed by the Copeland family to make room for two closets.

The entrance hallway is unique to the time period and includes a classic ornamental antique hall divider display made of cherry wood.

Originally, Dr. Copeland had a garden area and a four-acre orchard with a well and two barns, one for his horse and buggy and one for his automobile, the first in Dallas County.  The orchard land was presented to First Presbyterian Church in 1948 as a gift from the Copeland family.

Furniture in the home’s study includes a desk dated from the 1800s set just as Dr. Copeland used it, holding his physician’s bag and books donated by his family.  The family has also donated many of the home’s original pieces of furniture.

Tarrant County is now under a ban on ourtdoor burning

On Tuesday the Tarrant County Commissioner’s Court approved an Outdoor Burning Ban for Tarrant County.  The ban will be in effect for next 90 days.

Fire Marshal Randy Renois said the abundance of dry grass, lower than normal humidity, and strong gusty winds that occur during this time of the year makes the ban on outdoor burning necessary to protect properties in Tarrant County.

Grand Prairie CAP to participate in statewide search and rescue exercise

Courtesy Civil Air Patrol

On January 18-21, Civil Air Patrol (CAP) volunteer members of Addison, Crusader (in Grand Prairie ), Dallas, Irving, and Mesquite Blacksheep Composite Squadrons, as well as Group III Staff, will establish and operate the Incident Command Post that will be known as Mission Base. From this location, statewide units will be directed in a training exercise to simulate actual emergency search and rescue, disaster relief, and homeland security missions.

CAP will run a Distributed Search and Rescue Exercise in which the Texas Wing Headquarters will be transferred temporarily from Waco to Mesquite, TX. From this location, where the Wing Commander, Col. Joe R. Smith, will be located, a number of staging areas (CAP’s name for remote operation centers) all over Texas will be tasked to perform a variety of missions. They will report their results using various means of communication, as might happen during a real emergency.

CAP's Emergency Services program includes air and ground search and rescue, disaster relief and civil defense operations. CAP cooperates with and assists other federal, state and local emergency service agencies. CAP’S primary mission is to save lives and relieve human suffering.

During a real emergency, Texas Wing, as a member of the Texas State Operations Center (SOC), would be tasked by the Air Force at the request of the SOC, in order to implement all-agency damage assessment and relief
